HOL Genre 2.0 - Theme

The game's setting or subject. The same theme may be seen across multiple genres. For example, a platformer and text adventure game may both have mythological themes (see the two games called Myth!). It is for this reason that Theme has been separated out into its own field.

The theme field has been used to categorise some sub-genres such as Simulation. The idea is that rather than breaking down Simulation into planes, tanks or boats, for example, the mode of transport would be moved into Theme. This then allows the transportation theme to be used in other genres.

The old system included genres like Adult or Educational. These didn't describe the game mechanics at all and have been moved into Theme.
