External CD drive for the Amiga 1200

Quote:
Another top quality announcement has hit our inbox, as moments ago we found out through the Commodore Amiga Facebook group, that a developer by the name of Marc G. Falconer is working on an external CD based device for the Commodore Amiga!

Indeed a bit pointless these days. There a great CD image loader add-ons/mods for nearly all CD consoles but now we get an external CD-Rom for the Amiga A1200?

You're probably right. I should throw all my Amiga CDs in the trash then, since I don't have a CD drive that I can connect to my A1200.

I think there is a use case for this. There are lots of Magazine CDs from the 90s which this would work lovely with. Also with the increasing price of the CD32 machine, it could be a good way to play some of the CD32 library (assuming there will be an emulator for it).

Huh, I have all my Amiga CDs, Magazine or otherwise, (since a long time) as iso files, which I have no trouble mounting on neither real, nor "fake" Amiga systems.

Is this in support of David Pleasence plans with the CD1200 or a separate initiative?

It’s a nice idea but I think the finish of the unit would have to be absolutely top notch to gain wider interest

Do you know if it's possible to mount isos on a real Amiga to use instead of real CDs?

Yes, of course it is, just like you can mount ADF images, or even hard drive images.

There are several incarnations of the diskimage.device, but this is probably the best:

I will try it out, thanks.

I still think this can be occasionally handy, particularly on systems with small internal storage, limited file transfer capabilities, those who want CDDA (e.g. CD32 games), etc.

External CD drive for the Amiga 1200

A standard laptop drive can still do CDDA? I have the impression that it typically is done in software with modern laptops.

Apart from doing such device just for fun i can't see any good use nowadays for only a CD-Drive.
But it would be interesting to know how it is connected. Looking at the pictures it seems they just connect an IDE cable through the SCSI Connector "hole" to the internal IDE Connector?

I recall watching a video where someone was modding their 1200 with an ODD IDE adaptor that had the old audio out connector (meant for connecting to sound cards).

I also saw in the OP video what looked like two RCA connectors at the back.

So it may be possible.

Lightbulb

I put this on my Amiga 1200 and it works quite well, the sound can be extracted through two audio RCA channels or you can bridge it with the Amiga sound through a small plate, but do not ask whoever buys it, because I do not remember
