They are banned at the forum software level.

I just killed the lasted of them, we are now at 300 users instead of 2000, road to 100

To be honest, I would block every agent saying "Bot" or "Spider" via htaccess.

The remaining bots are fines, there are not making a lot of // queries, abime.net can handle 300 people on EAB without problem, but not 3000.

Certainly seems a lot snappier and more consistent now.

300 still sounds like a laughable number nowadays can't it be made better? what is limiting it?

If I hazard a guess, old software on an old stack on a modest VM without any cache fronting, that isn't "cloud native", doesn't scale horizontally and all that jazz because being able to serve 300 concurrent actual users is more than adequate given how many actual users are online, but serving the relentless list requests of thousands of bots is too much.

What benefit does the owner get from increased traffic and hosting costs serving a bunch of spiders and scrapers when almost the entire community knows about the place already?

abime.net server hardware is old
Better CPU with higher number of core would be necessary to improve the number of simultaneous users EAB can serve, it's simple.

Yep, the spider bot banning is perfect for now, no need for new hardware at the moment.
