since a few day i'm seeing the message "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later." instead of the forum very often.
is there some overload going on?

Yes, that is really annoying. Get that too since weeks (actually, since I started posting here again after years of inactivity).

It also killed pretty much 50% of my posts, as the text is gone then and I'm not going to wait until the server is no longer busy and retype my post.

I remember in the past it was common practice for bots to read the file

robots.txt

from the server's root. It provides information which paths may not be scanned. Like this:

User-agent: msnbot
Disallow: /

User-agent: searchpreview
Disallow: /

(...)

But nowadays you probably better block everything which cannot be identified as a real browser...

As far as I can see this forum does not have such directives.


Related to blocking these crawlers building ML/AI datasets, I was reading around that a set of relevant directives could look like this:

User-agent: GPTBot
User-agent: CCBot
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Disallow: /
User-agent: *
Allow: /

of course it's just a "gentlemen's agreement": they can opt to ignore it.

Still the same here, had the message twice this morning. Pages are also extremely slow to load at times, clicking a forum link can take as long as 20 seconds before it responds. The whole site is acting as if it was under some kind of DDOS attack!

Since two week I have the same problem.
The most annoying (fo me at least ) being when I click on the "post quick reply" button and get my text lost due to this message being displayed.. which happened several times

Since new HOL launch, the bots are just reminding that we exist and try to sniff every signel post of EAB.
So yes, we have to performance problem currently.
I setup a max hit/s rate limit, but it doesn't seem enough.
