Amiga 1000 RAM

I've got an Amiga 1000 with 512K of RAM which I'm using in a small TV studio for CG. I have some software which says it's compatiable with A1000, but needs at least a megabyte of RAM. Is it possible to upgrade an A1000 to 1MB? If so, where would I be able to find the upgrade? Thanks.

There were a few internal ram expansions made for A1000's iirc some allowed upto 4mb and even an 010 cpu

The problem is your talking 'rare as rocking horse shit', better off looking for a secondhand 500/1500/2000 to use instead.

Is there any way to use the external RAM expansion to get it up to 1MB?

I have an external 1meg box which connects to the side of my A1000 it has no brand names on it.

As Severin pointed out pretty much anything for the A1000 is rare.
Your best bet would be to try and aquire another A1000 that comes with an expansion, but then you may as well get a cheap A500 with 1 meg.

Click these links for information on some of the amiga 1000 external memory upgrades that exist.

Mine is simillar to these but not the same.

was a 2 MB "megabox".
"I missed out" rather means "I listened to reason".

( = I didn't buy it INTENTIONALLY, because I'm not the guy to know no bounds at all Doing without is always a fucking hard thing to cope with, nor is it easy to convince your inner self, but it must be possible to do that sometimes, even though it implies waiting for another half a year)

@andreas

I suppose you will come across another one cheaper.

They would be more common in germany but are really rare in Australia.

Supposedly you can solder more RAM in somewhere, but directions for doing that are scarce.

It's cheaper to buy a nice A2000.

I wanted to find a cheap HD for my A500 and never found one that was under $75 on ebay so I purchased an A2000 with 2091 inside and can play those HD games now.

The 2000 with shipping was $50 and now has 2mb fast memory (memory controllers for a2000 are cheap) on the scsi card (pulled from some old pc video cards).

Unless you are realy attached to the 1000 I say get a more common and cheaply expandable system and upgrade that , its cheaper and easier.

The requirement to use an expensive Kickstart switch for switching between, say, 1.2 and 1.3 would always keep me from using an A2000!
Turn the A1000 off, put other KS disk in, and you're in 1.2!
And you can as well use 1.0 (US NTSC models only), 1.1, two kinds of 1.2, 1.3 and - EVEN - softkick into 2.04!

Kickstart switches can't outweigh this convenience I have with an A1000.

Well my 2000 has kickstart 1.3 and its staying like that. I havnt seen any games yet that wont run on it.

Reasom I got it was because of large games that need a HD, getting a HD for an A500 costs too dam much and is expensive for an A1000 also.

I dont see a problem having multiple machines anyway (if you have the room and extra equipment to hook them up).

I have upgraded my A2000 to Kickstart 2.04, but so far haven't had any problems with being able to use TUDE to softkick using older Kickstart versions when I need to. I have a Kickstart switcher to install and the old 1.3 rom, but I just haven't gotten around to installing it yet. Of course if I can't get the A2000 to run something really old, I also have the A1000 handy to do that with. I'm with Andreas here about the A1000. To me the A1000 is THE classic Amiga, and I wouldn't part with mine for anything. Fortunately I do have one of the Microbotics Starboard 2MB expansions for it, so memory really hasn't been an issue for anything I might run on it.

Unless you have a kickstart switcher for the A1000 like the Kwickstart II It allows you to switch between real kickstart roms and softkicking from disk

Hey, that's a nice piece!
Thanks DrBong for the good research.

(although I don't WANT to know what the collecting weirdos would be willing to shell out for this one on ebay )

It's very nice! Saves me a lot of hassle trying to get ancient games to work that haven't been HD patched. Fortunately, my Kwikstart came installed in an A1000 that I got in a cheap deal on an Amiga hardware lot a few years back. I can only imagine the bidding feeding frenzy that would occur if one did appear on Ebay!
