Can this be achieved with Workbench 3.1 on AGA machine?

Hello, my Amiga/Workbench knowledge is not that much and I never had an AGA machine before now. I have bought 3.1 Kickstart for the A1200. I am now preparing to install Workbench 3.1 on a CF card for this setup.

I have checked some screenshots and found this. I was therefore wondering, can I achieve such a setup with Workbench 3.1? or this is impossible and i need at least Workbench 3.9?

If indeed this is possible with Workbench 3.1 then can anyone give me any leads? Like how to increase the number of colors, how to set up the background image, and how to use PNG icons. I found this in Aminet, but it says it is for Workbench 3.5/3.9.

Yes, you can get what you are looking for...
... with "AmiKit for real Amiga" which is a preinstalled program collection for AGA systems like AmiKit, put up and maintained by Retrofan:

Update: Ooops, wrong assumption, I thought Amikit for real Amigas won't need OS 3.9, but it does as Thomas says in the following post.

You can get support for PNG and other icons by installing my icon.library 46.4. There is a ready to boot floppy image "IconDemoADF" which demonstrates how things have to set up to get support for all types of icons with OS 3.0 or 3.1. Just compare the startup-sequence and the disk structure with your own setup. http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=64079

AmiKit needs OS 3.9, too.

But you can add most of the features to 3.1. However, more than 256 colors is not possible.

Peter's icon.library will give you PNG icon support.

There are many toolbars like AmiDock, I've even written my own (not published yet).

Datatypes for jpeg, gif, png etc. are available on Aminet. If you need V43 picture.datatype, you can use the one which comes with Picasso96, it works without gfx card, too.

Set number of colors with Prefs/ScreenMode, colors with Prefs/Palette, wallpaper with Prefs/WBPattern.

If you want a preset package, look at AmigaSYS or ClassicWB.

In fact you are pointing to a workbench with an icon pack that never has existed. I have the idea that AmigaSYS was preparing years ago an install with those MattahanĀ“s icons that never was launched, or it was perhaps a one-man job. It was called the Little Monster theme http://uriah.deviantart.com/art/AmigaSYS-2-0-19553267

There have been other people using them like Mad-Matt: http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...&postcount=332

And another one was installed for OS4:
http://www.intuitionbase.com/~ajk/os4.html

As you see there have been several attemps to use these icons for the amiga, but as far as I know none of this packs was made using Dual Png, what means that the icons won't change once selected to have a yellow border or similar.

About the OS to use them, it's possible to use those icons with the magnificent icon.library by PeterK. Unfortunately to use my AmiKit for Real amiga version you need or WinUAE or a miggy with an accelerator, at least 16Mb of ram and OS3.9.

You must be anyway a lucky man, as I have told that a Mattahan's icon pack for the Amiga never has existed.... till now, that I'm going to release a Plug-in of Dual png icons for my version that will let you install them all with a click and have an screen like this on WinUAE, in this case using also my Rtg Add-on for the photo:

without an accelerator and fast ram, you will be very limited in what you can do. you will probably be limited to 16 colours and magic workbench icons. rebels palette is best for 16 colous. perhaps a copper background/picture combo.

extra colours on the amiga consume a lot of processor time and all important chip ram. we mitigate this with patches in fast ram, which are faster and leave chip ram alone. but you will still need a faster processor.

luckily there are a few good low end accelerator solutions at reasonable prices available.
