Upgrading A600 to KS 3.1
Beware, here comes the n00b!
I've just picked up myself an A600 and fancy setting it up with Kickstart 3.1. I've seen loads of threads with A600's that have had a new ROM installed, but only having bought my first Amiga a couple of days ago I have no idea where to get one from or what gotchas there are relating to the part I need. I have a ROM here that has A500/A1500/A2000 on it, so I'm assuming that this is not going to be compatible...? My A600 has mobo PCB revision 1.5 btw, if that makes a difference. |

Buy a A500/A600/A2000 kickstart from vesalia. You will need a IC extractor tool to remove the old chip without risking damage to the socket.

Hmmmm, the chip on Versalia appears to do A500/A600/A2000, whilst mine says A500/A1500/A2000. If I remember correctly isn't the A1500 just a slightly different specced A2000?
The 3.1 ROM I have may be ok for an A600 then. |

The A600 version of kickstart is 40.63, but it is suitable for A500 and A2000 and variants (1500, 2500, 2000HD...).
Those labeled for A500 and 2000 lacks the SCSI.device, so they are not good to throw in an A600. |

rkauer, are you absolutely sure that they lack the scsi.device..
I'd say they all have it, no matter what machine names are written on the sticker. |

I'm also skeptical (but open minded), a quick scan indicates all r40.xx kickstarts include the scsi.device. Can someone that owns one of these ROMs confirm it either way?

Rev 40.63 includes the scsi.device, as well as the pcmcia resource. There's no difference between a A600 3.1 rom and A500/A2000 3.1 rom. I disassembled 40.63 with remus. If there was a version without scsi.device it would have had another name. I believe commodore didn't need to remove them since there's no problem about space and they used a single rom for all 16 bit bus systems.

Ouch! And although I have all the proper extraction tools I have to admit to always using a nice wide flat screwdriver when pulling a DIPP
Cheers for the info everyone. I'm going to try the ROM I have, so cross your fingers for me. |

Blagger_man - how did you get on? I have the same machine with the same revision (v1.5). The instructions I received with the chip state that some pins may need connecting acoording to motherboard revision. However, none of the numbers mentioned correspond to the A600.

Thanks again Hewitson - I assume therefore that the ROM can just be inserted?
Don't worry - ROM is fitted and I am now booting with Workbench 3.1. Last edited by pjtb; 15 March 2008 at 12:47. |

Yup, it's just a plug in job. The ROM boots my A600 perfectly
