PC Engine CD

Not that it apparently matters but the magic engine can play those lovely pce engine cds, so the whole other console debate is null and void (: If you guys really want I can host any PCE Engine CD if its chosen.

As far as good "newbie" games. Titan was a really cool concept. It's a block breaking game mixed with elements of pool. Check it out (: I was going to select it but thought otherwise. That and Zipang looked pretty interesting.

No, the CD games are for the PC-Engine, same console. Either for the CD-Rom add-on, or for the later PC-Engine Duo/Turbo Duo consoles which combines the standard console and the CD-rom in one machine.

They aren't different consoles. It's just a Genesis CD-Rom add-on with some improvements.

Some good PC Engine sites:

http://www.videogameden.com/

http://pcengine.co.uk/

http://www.pcecp.com/

This site is pretty dead, but some reviews are still online:

The Sega CD-"addon" has an own CPU clocked at 12.5MHz which is faster than the Genesis' CPU (runs at 7.something MHz).
It also added 8 PCM-channels to the audio capabilities and some gfx stuff.

Most games for Sega CD were really just Genesis-titles with added CD music - they didn't make use of the faster CPU and digital audio channels.

Very few titles were created specifically for the Sega CD and used its new CPU - but they do exist...

Thus it's more than just a "CD-Rom add-on with some improvements". It's an own system (although it needs to be added on to the Genesis).

The PC Engine CD on the other hand is indeed more or less just a CD-drive and adds more RAM. So maybe we could allow the CD games, after all. Or not - now it's too late...

Still only minor improvements imho. It's no different console, as you still need the Genesis console to play the games. Anyway, this is off-topic.

btw guys: Don't play Turrican PCE. It's a bad bad 256KB rip-off from the Amiga classic. Horribly ported from the Code Monkeys.

It's NEVER too late! Not when there are absolutely kick-ass games to be had from them. That, and the fact that Druid hasn't closed the thread yet... heh heh heh... ^^

Considering the fact the PC Engine is an 8bit-console and the small storage size of a PC Engine-cartridge it was not too bad (even though world 3 is missing).
Definitely superior to the Genesis-port (although this did include world 3).

True, the Genesis port is even worser. But it's still no joy to play Turrican in the PCE version. 256 KB for the HuCard? Ridiculous. The 8-Bit CPU was not the problem here, but The Code Monkeys/Accolade.

Yes, thank you for the PC Engine links Retro.

So... can we all agree Dracula X is the best PC Engine CD game?

It's one of the best CD games. There are many more great PCE-CD games.

I posted only game info/review sites. Proper CD images is another story. Mondemul has tons of them.

You can gain access to over 20,000 ROMs and ISOs of classic games when you join NeoROMcollector for $14.99 and only $4.99 each recurring month.
The Neoromcollector isn't very attractive these days.

With resourcefulness, and the fun of the hunt, Neroewhatever is a ripoff!
