The parts have arrived and I have tried to desolder one of the chips with not much luck and I don't want to damage the board any further. I've exposed a little bit of copper on one of the tracks, I just don't have the proper skills or tools for this. I think I will have to send it off for repair

You have not yet damaged anything, so don't worry. However the legs are not free enough to remove the chip yet, so more work is needed before you try to move it.

Kiitos Jope.
Perhaps I'll try again! |

Wiggle the legs a bit, leave alone the ones that are free. For the ones that still have solder in the vias, add in fresh solder and try to clean again.
The legs really need to move freely before you can lift the chip out without damaging the board. |

Go for it. Don't heat the same place for too long, you will burn the fiberglass or lift traces/vias.

Now I'm just making a mess |

You still haven't damaged anything, but I guess with the tools you currently have, it will be difficult to get all of the solder out.
If you have a pair of very small electronics diagonal cutters, you can cut the legs off near the chip's body on the other side of the PCB and then heat from the bottom and gently pull them out one by one with pliers. Then you still need to get the VIAs clean but hopefully it will be easier with heat on the bottom and pump on the top side. |

This is all fixed now thanks to Ian at Mutant Caterpillar Games in West Wales. He got the chips out and replaced the new ones on sockets. So that was the solution, but I wasn't able to do it myself. Just in case it helps anyone else. :-)
