Cyberstorm MK2 060@50 running hot

Hi all,

I'm using a Cyberstorm Mk2 with an 68060 at 50mHz and it's running pretty hot. This has me somewhat concerned as I recently lost an '040 CPU due to overheating. That was on another turbocard by the way.
I was under the impression that the '060 CPUs run quite cool, like maybe 40 degrees celsius? In my case the CPUgets almost too hot to touch, close to 80 degrees or so. Is that normal?
The board has not been overclocked and the crystal oscillator even has the original warranty sticker. Also the different resistors are in the 68060 configuration state.
According to Whichamiga my CPU is a rev 1 68060 at 50MHz.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

A lot of people say 060s run cool, this might be true in comparison to 040s but yes they will still hit temperatures over 60 (even up to 85) in normal operation, rather than using your finger get an IR thermometer to test the actual readings. It certainly won't do any harm, especially if airflow is an issue to add some active cooling, the chipset coolers do a really good job, something like this I'd recommend:

More of a concern is the way this heat effects other parts of the card such as the CPLD so it's definitely a good idea given the age of these cards to cool them down

Ps. The later revision chips do run cooler such as the Rev6 so it's actually not surprising you have these temps on a Rev1

No worries, I always ran one on my CSMK2 and was fine even clocked to 66mhz although I'd be less comfortable overclocking one now.

I have a Rev5 060 on my BPPC and at 60mhz it was roasting hot so I've clocked it back down to 50mhz and added a cooler.

If you go for the fan I the link you'll need a molex to 3pin connector. You can even put a fan speed controller between if you want to only jack it up when it's under load.

Might be worth shopping around as that's the first one that came up in my search! I've used that brand before though and was good quality.

Hi Thoughtbubble. Yes Fitzsteve gives excellent advice. I have a MK3 with rev 1. 060 and it also runs very hot. Not overclocked. It's in my A3000 which is known not to have the best air flow and space...

I added a fan to the underside of the floppy/power supply casing that circulates air in the entire area where the CPU card is. Now when I "touch" the top of the 060 it is luke-warm at best. Before it was HOT to the touch.

I do sleep better at night now

The rev 1's run a lot hotter than the rev 6's. I have a rev 1 @50MHz on my Blizzard 1260 and it's gets very hot, and a rev 6 @72MHz on my CSMKII, which has a fan and heatsink but still runs pretty cool.

Never trust your finger as a thermometer.. :-) Stuff feels burning hot at surprisingly low temps.

So true, that's why I invested in one of those handheld laser temperature readers to make sure the heat wasn't out of spec. Well worth getting one of these tools if you like to tinker on your machines.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. A lot of the concern stems from an earlier incident last week where I fried an 040 cpu.
Had my a4000/warpengine setup going for about a year. Lovely system it was and fast too. Got nearly 30000 dhrystones on sysinfo until the random errors and glitches came. Ended up with a black screen in the end. Turns out the fan on the cpu had seized.
Back to some more tinkering I suppose

Ouch. I hope you get a new CPU for it - those Warp Engines are the Dogs Bols.

I finger check mine for temps with the side of my little finger. If it feels hot it is hot in my opinion (but not necessarily out of spec). But if something feels hot, I like to cool it.

My Cyberstorm MK2 Rev1 060@50Mhz in my A4000 does not get very hot. A4000's don't have great airflow but are probably better than an A3000.

I've never measured the temperature. I bought it around 1996!

You can use thermal tape (often comes with the heatsink/fan combo already installed) or thermal adhesive from a small tube. You can buy it online or at most PC computer stores.
