Executive

Hi - any Executive users out there? I have had a love/hate relationship with this software since it came out (I actually registered it back in the day), but I think the hate side is mostly through not having the config set-up right or missing tasks to NOSCHEDULE.

I am currently using Standard scheduler with Amiga OS 3.2 (ramlib exception) and it seems solid as a rock and far more responsive under load. Great program.

Anyone willing to share their config? Which scheduler do you use? Any programs which need to be excluded from the scheduler not included in the magic wand?

Once again I am slightly confused. When I seem to find a good use case I find the system is quite responsive without Executive after testing.

Does anyone have a real world use case for Executive where it provides a significant benefit?

I am enjoying this little conversation with myself. I am convinced it definitely helps with IBrowse 3.0 browsing and general OS responsiveness with other programs. For sure!

I used to use executive in 3.1 and later 3.5. The benefit was much more apparent when the system was under load. In previous cases where input would get laggy or generally things would begin to grind, executive would tend to keep the thing moving better, depending on what it was that was responsible and which scheduler was active. The defaults made a difference for everyday work when multitasking heavily.

never really knew if using executive was worth it or just changing the "Set Quantum" value in MCP to 1, i run MCP on 3.2.x but i have a LOT of option on it disabled with only a select few enabled just in case something clashes or is just obsolete/redundant.

I had Executive on my A1200 bitd, and I remember it made everything smoother. I did use multitasking heavily. I don't think I changed any configuration, just used the defaults more or less.

In fact I still have the same setup on the same A1200 today. I just recently investigated how Executive dynamically changes the priorities of busy tasks while doing some testing on the miggy.

I also used Executive back in the 040 days. It definitely made the machine more responsive when playing MP3s on the CPU and things like that.

Haven't had it running in a long time though.

I still have it installed on my A3000/060 3.9 setup (copied to WinUAE nowadays...), if anything just because i always had and it provides top and a desktop CPU use widget.

I used to have the same problem when render images on Imagine 3D, I got eventually an app that could set the priority of it, which would take some seconds in what would be hours rendering, but the computer would run as if it wasn't doing any render. That with regular system.
