Hi guys,
i know some games which made history... Sonic, shadow of the beast, turrican, defender of the crown, shenmue, assassin's creed,GTA,mario,Lemmings, witcher 3,etc..
But in 2020-2022 which games are making history ??? For me none.
But i'm curious about your thinking ????

Not so old, more recent games.
The witcher 3 is one too.
7 years is an eternity in the video games... At least by the past.

Nowadays history is made through outrage. Fallout 76, Cyberpunk, the Warcraft 3 remaster and Diablo: Immortal are controversial games that made the flames of hell shoot out of the earth.

I don't like any of them but all those that have been mentioned (aside from 'Tunic' and 'Rocket League', perhaps) are "making history", i.e., will be fondly (or infamously) remembered for years to come and will become classics in their own right in 15 to 20 years time.

I'd add 'League of Legends', the 'Assassin's Creed' series and the 'Call of Duty' series. Again, I like none of them (played only 'Assassin's Creed Rogue' because it featured the 1755 Lisbon's earthquake) but they have since become very solid and well-established series which, in some cases ('WarCraft' and 'Assassin's Creed') have even given birth to (admittedly lacklustre) Hollywood movies.

Elden Ring?
I played it for some time, but returned back to old Amiga games.

Breath of The Wild ?

Elden Ring is divisive but has all of the accolades so think will do down in history , as will breath of the wild

There's not really been anything of note since Bioshock Infinite or The Last of Us IMHO. Star Wars: Squadrons had promise but was not AAA earth shattering as they should have invested and allowed Criterion to do it and build on their Battlefront 2 Rogue One: VR Mission.

I think interesting games are not profitable compared to yearly shovel releases. Let's hope that Monkey Island 3 is a success and that Cuphead DLC are good. It's a shame 'We Happy Few' was not developed for narrative story telling from the ground up as that had potential. The Black Glove could have been interesting too had the Kickstarter not failed. Where are the likes of Alien Isolation 2 and Sonic Mania 2? I get the impression that good games are not appreciated!

I mean I love Astro's Playroom but again will it be remembered? I don't know.

Probably Returnal is the closest to history making. The headline is, "Housemarque make an arcade style roguelike that breaks into the mainstream!"

I don't know about history part, but I can tell what games I enjoyed and some of them might be like next step in 'history' for presentation and playability.

Factorio (2016) - design, complexity and repeatability,
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (2017) - Background voices still hunting me to this day...
Control (2019) - unique dark story
A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019) - great details in the game
Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) - details, incorporated real time weather and traffic, did I mention details??

I think the question would have to be which games will end up being emulated and copied in the way that say Doom or Command & Conquer was genre-defining (and note that whoever is first is rarely the one that gets to define the genre).

From the past couple decades I would propose: Dark Souls (the rise of the "soulslike" action game), Spelunky (may be a better candidate for the semi roguelike explosion), Minecraft (self explanatory), Halo (the modern FPS shift). Skyrim (nailed down that every game ever must be open world)

Probably a couple more that I cant think of right now.

Note that being popular isnt quite the same. Witcher 3 was very popular but has made no difference at all to how anyone makes games.

The open world bit was Morrowind paving the way and Oblivion cementing it really, Skyrim was and remains immensely popular because of the flipping huge amount of content it has.

Yeah, you are right, open world was already becoming a thing before Skyrim, though Skyrim really nailed it down as the default.

Those games are good, but i continue to think that they won't make history,
like warcraft or COD. In 10 years they will be forgotten.
Pacman is still in memories like doom etc...
That makes a long time i didn't play a game with originality or perhaps death stranding is one of them.
It's like everything was done already nothing surprising me anymore.
Or perhaps i'm just becoming an old man with nostalgia ??? Don't know.

10 years starting now or sometimes later?

Where MMO RPG started? Ultima or Everquest?? (played both, second one even recently as couple of years ago when whole group from other MMO RPG game server moved to vanilla EQ server. For those who are not aware, original game had no maps, you had to draw your own maps. My interest did not last very long...

Beat Saber is one of new 'history' moment games, isn't it?!

I don't doubt it but it's too political and woke for its own good and any game that focuses on revenge (rather than parental love in the first one) but also requires you to empathise with the main character is going to lead to quite a harrowing game IMHO!
