New Monkey Island

Sorry if this has been posted already, I really couldn't find it.

https://returntomonkeyisland.com/

New Monkey Island game done by Ron Gilbert. I doubt it will be an Amiga release, but it's really cool news nonetheless.

Partnering with Devolver should give good support too. Great news.

It might actually be something decent, though I'm extremely wary of these retro remakes. The art looks very bland though, just like every other modern indie game so that's a downer. But I suppose the story/puzzles might be a strong side here...

its not a remake.
Ron Gilbert has been wanting to make a real sequel to Money Islands 2 for years. He had time to think about it, the result should be pretty fun!

Because even though Monkey Island 1&2 existed on the Amiga, this new game is definitely not a retro game.

Yeah, sorry, mis-worded it...I know it's not a remake. And I agree that he can possibly pull it off, of all people.

But the tepid gfx is a big turn off for me, even if story & humour would remain as good as in the old days. And even the latter might suffer becuse it;s really hard to recapture the same vibes after nearly 3 decades. Most of similar projects have fallen flat in this department.

It kinda goes for that "Curse of Monkey Island (3)" look.

"Monkey 3" was made without Ron Gilbert and he always wanted to made the proper Monkey 3.

Ron liked the Graphics and Music of Curse of Monkey Island (3) but it wasnt the story he would had told.
For example; he would never had Guybrush and Elaine married.
(and thats how Curse of Monkey Island (3) begins)

Now, I am so EXCITED for the proper Monkey3 !!!!
( loved Ron GilbertĀ“s Thimbleweed Park so much )

[ Show youtube player ]

(watch the end of this video; he say "it will be the proper Monkey 3" )

I very much liked "Curse of Monkey Island" and thought it put Monkey Island on a new higher level graphicwise and technically. Ron Gilbert would have told a different story, well, that's not very surprising because two people hardly come up with exactly the same story. I can understand that Monkey Island is his baby but that is irrelevant to pretty much anyone but him. The third part was a good Monkey Island nontheless. And no part of its story was as big a let down as the ending of MI2. I have yet to meet anybody who thought MI2 had a good ending. Since the laws of logic don't mean much in the world of Monkey Island, it won't be a problem that the new Monkey Island probably will ignore the stories told in parts 3 through 5. What counts is that there will be a new modern Monkey Island, I am sure it will be good.

I also like the graphics shown in the trailer. I don't see why anyone would make a pixelated game in this day and time other than for nostalgic reasons. Finally all the monster graphics capabilities of today's computers are put to merely esthetic use. No showing off triangle counts and fps, the hardware can do it all, now let's see what the graphics artists can come up with.

@grond

I would go as far as to say "everybody that finished Monkey Island 2 never forgot that ending"

It was truly a "W T F" moment.
He had planed that ending; there was a reason behind it.
That Ending was not a throw away ending;
It had meaning for all future Monkeys to come. (sadly it never happend)

Yes, Curce of the Monkey Island was very enjoyable,
but still to this day, i never forgot the ending to Monkey 2.

How many endings did i forget in all this years, but never that one

Ron Gilbert doesn't seem to completely reject MI3. In the trailer, there is Murray, which pleases me.
I also liked monkey 3 even if it's not the same 'spirit' as MI1 & MI2...

Yeah, this also bugs me. But I would say it's more a matter of cheap animation, than the art style.

I guess I'm in the minority who liked the MI2 ending. It's one of my favorite adventure game scenes. Perhaps it left an impression on me because I was young, but I liked the ambiguity.

The art style doesn't bother me much. The gritty pixels of MI2 and Fate of Atlantis were my favorite, with MI1 in second place, but I also enjoyed the remasters. The MM / Zak style character art in Thimbleweed didn't click with me so I'm happy to see something different.

Really looking forward to this. Slightly gutted I missed out on the 30th anniversary anthology. I felt that should have been better marketed but perhaps they were intentionally going for a limited release.

I'm excited about a new monkey game. Not excited about the gfx but I'm sure it will turn out fine. MI3 was an excellent game, so I think wanting to do a "proper" third game is a bit disrespecful (if Gilbert has indeed said that he wants to do proper third game). The devs on MI3 did solid work and handled the MI universe with lots of love, humor and respect. MI4 was crap while Tales of Monkey Island was surprisingly good also. I'm sure a new game with Gilbert at the helm will be worth playing.

Are you serious ?
There are thousands of "indie" games out there, so how do you know every indie game ?

The Art of Indie games is unmatched.

Did you only play Popeye or Life of the Black Tiger

Return to Monkey Island; sure, personally i would have prefered a more PixelArt Style but the chosen art is very cute, i have to say.

i am so happy this is happening

Escape from MI was the low point for me

Curse style of graphics was a real nice fit

But super excited for this - would be nice to have a graphical switch option for pixel art like they did in the SE versions of the first 2 games (although i did keep the updated ones on, but nice to switch)
