Bad block

Hiya. My HDD seems damaged, I'm not surprised.

I saw that HDtoolbox can mark blocks as bad, but it requires cylinder and head, or sector or bytes from index. I don't know either of these things! Any suggestions?

It would be nice from you if you could write your config, especially what filesystem do you use...

sorry but I don't have a time to surf everything here, if you want to help quickly, isn't it simplier to write it down again and again? anyway, I am afraid I cannot help you, I don't use FFS nor wb3.0 HDToolBox...

now I remember, try BFormat if you want, at your own risk ofcoz

uise something like Amiback or QBtools, they can scan the HD and create a dummy file where the bad blocks are located.

Don't try opening this file though.. you'll just get r/w errors

A checksum error can be restored with a format I think, it's not a bad block. Bad blocks are HARDWARE errors that cannot be restored. This probably happened by resetting or turning off your Amiga while it was reading or writing to disk.

Oh, just realized you are using an emulated amiga, so no clue why you got this error. Probably because of the same circumstances (resetting emu while emulated amiga was writing to disk)?

well, emulated amiga and real hdd. but yeah, that could be the problem.

Ah, REAL HDD! then you might be into something.
If you don't mind losing your information... try formatting it. But don't take my word for this, probabl there are issues arising from the use of a real HDD in an emulated Amiga that I am unaware of. Wait for someone who has done this to reply.

That will work. Back everything up that you can and re-format, then copy everything back. Exactly the same problem occurs if you are using a hard disk file and you reboot the emulator whilst read/write operations are running.

yeah and maybe you would like to install something better than FFS, try SFS or buy PFS!

For example, SFS was recently updated to 1.230. You can install SFS to boot partition where only Workbench is installed and thus you can test the performance and stability of SFS. If it goes wrong (and notice that I have said IF) you can easily reinstall Workbench without loosing any private data on other partitions...

or try DiskSafe with FFS as a prevention when you get out of current problem.
