How not to solder. Part #2.
The first series was a bit shorter: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=71768
I bought 3 defective A1200 motherboards on ebay. Needed a Alice chip but figured I could fix up two of them at least. I have now decided otherwise. So, without further ado: I'll just leave these loose thingies in the package unprotected. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/1.JPG Yes, removing caps is easy. Just twist and bend and melt. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/2.JPG http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/4.JPG Lisa is an arse. I hate her. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/3.JPG http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/5.JPG Kickstart sockets needs a bit of violence to come off. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/6.JPG The more solder you use, the better. That speaks for itself. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/7.JPG Used too little solder on one cap? Compensate on another. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/8.JPG New traces can be made almost invisible to the naked eye! http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_MB_Bad_repairs/9.JPG http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/9b.JPG Soldering iron too thick? Dont worry. Plastics melt to give room. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/10.JPG Last time I tried, I could only remove one kickstart socket. I'll try again. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/11.JPG No, its NOT OK as the RF modulator says. Check top right as well. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/12.JPG Plastic is not good for the environment. I'll melt it all and break some tracks while I'm at it. Easily fixed. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/13.JPG http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...epairs/13b.JPG No wires? Just use an old cap leg and glue it in place. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/14.JPG Bad picture, bad soldering. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/15.JPG If a little glue does not work, use more until it does. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/16.JPG Tried re-tinning the track and you fail? Just repair it with a leg. I would also like to point out the top right cap. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/17.JPG Last edited by Turran; 18 March 2014 at 14:45. |

And now we know why the prices for an A1200 have skyrocketed in the last few years
I presume not a single one is working after all of this, right? Friendly hint, next time buy a $20 hot air gun, even if most of them are way too hot for rework, you will certainly kill less stuff trying to desolder a PLCC that way (well, if it heats up chips to 800C that won't be good either!) EDIT: I should stop looking at the pics. They make me sad |

BUT, I found more on them on closer inspection! What do you mean "center the chip before tacking it in" http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/18.JPG http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...epairs/18b.JPG BAM! That should stay put. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/19.JPG When melting all the plastic with my hot airgun, I lost a part that soldered itself to another place. I'll just leave it there. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/20.JPG No, I still will not listen to you about centering. I'll just bend the legs to match instead. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/21.JPG Here is an interesting fact. If you melt the plastic once, do you not learn your lesson for next time? http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/22.JPG Apparently you do not. (not the same motherboard). http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/23.JPG A valid method is actually to drill into the chip if you break a leg. Or you can just drill here and there. Other legs all look good anyway. http://www.grandis.nu/images/A1200_M...repairs/24.JPG Last edited by Turran; 18 March 2014 at 15:19. |

Feels like hot glue to the touch.. no clue why you'd smear that over a few chips )

Erm.... I am truly fecking shocked!
Really! There should be a custodial sentance for such cruel acts... I am speachless here!!! Never have I seen such destruction. Hell even my younger self from years ago would not do such damage I will now have nightmares after seeing that lot lol. |

Resisted the urge to click this thread because 9 out of 10 I'd end up posting "still a lot better solder skills than i possess" but then I saw the photos. I'm just a simple guy who happens to ruin hardware but these boards are ruined by true artists.
