Its an unused expansion port space, just a plastic clip on cover goes over it.

Ah right, im missing the clip so i thought something should be there. What sort of things could go in there? Also, does anyone know where i can get hold of the little PCB with the 3 lights on, as mine is missing? Cheers.

USB is used quite a lot in that spare space, and also some people mount Hard drives externally and run the cable through that gap.

The SCSI 25 Pin adaptor mounts at this spot from the Blizzard SCSI module that fits onto Blizzard accelerators... it gives you a SCSI adaptor to connect to from the rear of the Amiga - I have an external CD ROM running on my A1200 like this...
