A500 GVP HD8+ Hard Drive ROM 3.7 vs 4.15

Here is one...

Just burned a 27256 with the latest 4.15 of gvpscsi ROM as I was trying to see more than 491MB on a 9Gig hard drive.... The computer and drive functioned fine, but I got the same MB detection and yes I upgrade the gvpscsi files in the exp folder and version tested everything, but also as a result the system won't autoboot the hard drive.

So, I plugged ROM 3.7 back in and once again it autoboots DH0:.

Is there something in the new ROM that disables autobooting, or anyone have any suggestions?

I may try 3.15 next, but since I'm not seeing anymore disk space with the 4.15, whats the point...ttyl

@ttyl

recently I burned a 4.15 ROM and have seen much improvment in capacity.

I did however use HDToolsBox from OS3.1 - this was able to see and setup several partions on an 18.1GB SCSI U2W drive (with a 50pin adapter) *remember to change the icon tool type from "scsi.device" to "gvpscsi.device"

I assume that when you programmed the 27c256 with the Hex file that you copied the original 16K file and added it to the end of itself (making a 32K file to be programmed) - this is required to do as the upper address is not asserted and left floating.... as such it will have issues if it manages to boot.

I actually burned a 27c512 and concatenated it 4 times (my 27256's were 300ns and didn't work with errors)...

Interesting, my 9 gig is 68 pin used w/adapter too. I'm using 2.04 kickstart, waiting on a 3.1 that is in the mail. maybe that will help.

So copy gvpscsi.device to DEVS/scsi.device? or do you mean click on the DH0: icon -> information and change that to gvpscsi.device?

sorry, newbie here...

thanks,

what works for me -

1. copy the gvpscsi.device to the expansion directory
2. open the "tools" directory on workbench disk
3. edit the icon information of HDToolBox
4. change the "SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device" to "SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpscsi.device"

There is a drawback - you will need to update your FastFileSystem to take advantage of the SCSI-DIRECT that is supported with the GVP impact Series 2 Controller - or you could use PFS2 or 3 for this purpose.

Unless you have an 020 or faster cpu, you wont be able to use SFS (SmartFileSystem)

Have a look on AmiNet theres plenty of software to help there.

I have say that I noticed the eProm you are using is 300ns.... thats quite slow, personally I have not used any slower than 200ns on these devices - not sure if that (300ns) ROM speed would cause any issues though - but it is possible.

Anyway for increased performance, I would suggest looking up Transfer Masks, especially 24bit transfer mask... as the GVP I2 SCSI controller is a 24bit DMA unit.

Thanks for the responses. Hopefully the 3.1 kickstart will be here soon.

The 27512 that I settled on is 120ns...the 27128&27256's that I have are 300ns - that's why I chose the 512 and concatenated 4 times. the slower chips were giving me crashes.

I'll d/l the ffs later today and see how that works. sounds promising
