I sort of like the idea of keeping a floppy around, since my A1200 keeps "looking" for a floppy in the drive, regardless of if i'm playing of the harddrive. So, i put a empty floppy in the drive, and it shuts up, neatly.

I knew it was "default" and sometimes refereed to as the Amiga heartbeat, but i didn't know there was a software to kill the noise. Grabbed anticlick, just might use it.
Thanks. B! |

There is 100% need for floppies. Period. I can't imagine using the 500 without them. I sorely detest harddrives and the likes for A500's. I need to dig through the diskboxes and to hear the diskdrive sound like wounded camel when it's in use. I'm gonna keep buying new disks until the very last day they are made, and probably then I'll start buying shit disks on ebay. Disks are my crack.

I'm still curious to know if you can actually buy the 3.5" DS/DD disks anywhere (or HD disks that are guaranteed to work reliably in all Amigas).

I've gotten my DS/DD's either from GGS-Data or Amigakit fairly recently. Last time I needed some GGS where out of stock but when I asked him he took some in. Both GGS and Amigakit sold me disks that where of impeccable quality.

I've had issues with a couple of HD disks formatted as DD in the past. Now, I can't say whether that was just issues with the disks anyway or if it was because I formatted them DD, but they'd develop read errors after a time (think weeks rather than years here). Once formatted again they were fine - I just wouldn't trust them with anything important!

Formatting HD media in a DD drive (or HD drive with HD hole covered) will make the drive use the wrong current and result insufficient (=wrong) magetic field (coercivity, Oe) for writing.
You can actually write DD track information to a HD platter in a HD drive, that will read back ok, because the drive will use the correct writing current. |
