I assume we start from Round 1 (Block Town) and loop through the levels until we lose all our lives?

A simple and fun game.

My only niggle is that the score is pulled from the screen as soon as you die, so the only way to capture it is on the hiscores and name entry screens.

My first go... could have been higher, as I lost 3 lives early on before I realised that Pacman can jump.

I also started from Block Town. Lost last two lives way too easily, but that purple ghost was just so fast.

Yes, we are indeed starting from Block Town, just to clarify that point.

Score was 907,220 after the first playthrough. How about we don't continue after beating the game and just take the score at the end (you get taken back to the title screen and have to explicitely start the game again to continue with your score)?
That way we'd prevent extreme score differences like in Rick Dangerous 2.

Rick Dangerous 2 isn't a good comparison as that gave an absurd bonus for finishing that meant the scores were hugely superior to those who fell even slightly short of completion, with no opportunity to make the gap up otherwise. Here there is every opportunity if people are willing and able to put the time in.

This is my first go and already much better than my 2010 effort. It's a shame the first few stages are so slow but the game really picks up and becomes a lot of fun after that.

Okay, fair enough.

That could be easily fixed if we'd allow starting from sandbox-land...

I always die 2 or 3 times on the slow levels, and just like Mega Typhoon, its the 'easy' levels which kill the player more than the later harder ones, so its important to always start from the first level.

Very good idea about a non-looping scenario, but this only brings up the element of milking every screen for the biggest score. In theory, leaving the game open means players dont need to milk, and this should mean less avoidable deaths from risky stunts, so they get further.

Besides, we usually play these games until death or game over, and the loop screen is not death, or game over, or even using a continue token, its just a carry on to the next part of the game.

Good point Dan, I did think about that also and the chances are a 'milkfest' (ooer) is what it would have boiled down to, which isn't really what Pacman should be about. Anyway it's not the longest game in the world, even with the slow levels (which are indeed quite dangerous so you can't get complacent) so it's easy enough to pick up and play, and you can get a pretty decent score if you stick at it for an hour or so.

Anyway, Easter weekend is approaching so perhaps I can sneak in a cheeky extra go or two

True, Dan. The "easy" levels are definitely the most difficult so with loops we need them or else you could easily loop forever. Still extreme scores are now possible. A jumping Pacman is just overpowered...let's see how this plays out.

After spending most of yesterday playing this, on my best run so far I managed to loop the game once.

One of childhood favourites of me and my sister. Unfortunately I won't get her to play (she used to be better than me), but here's my opening score:

I am not sure with this, Graham. 641790 is the top score by IAN in WHDLoad pack and it displays to everyone at this screen (from some unknown reason) who managed it to top ten,but is bellow 641790. I had some 581k points and it also tried do tell me I got 641790. Your real score is displayed after you entered your name, in hi-score table.

Graham, I bumped into this issue myself today. The top score which appears on the game over screen is the all-time highest. It said I was on 641,790, and then I went back to check my actual scores, and the score was much lower.

I am in but this is not my kind of game... it will be hard to do much more than this even if I haven't played more than a few hours...

Er, oops. Well, that was embarrassing. You are right, that score wasn't my score at all but the top score. That seems a rather unorthodox and confusing way of doing things but I should have paid more attention anyway. My real score was less impressive, but I had another go yesterday and managed to improve slightly.
