Ideal active & passive 68k coolers?
Hey friends, I'd like to order some new active and passive coolers for my various Amigas. Primarily this is for my 68060s which I plan to overclock, so would be great to have active cooling, though I'd like to have some passive coolers on hand for the future. Anyone have good advice on which to use, especially new ones?

A good advice: don't overclock your valuable 060, unless you have a stack of spares. It's not worth shortening the CPU's lifetime for some minimal speed increment.
If you are after speed, get a PiStorm. Overclocking made sense only when no faster alternative (or the money to buy one) was available. We should not overclock retro hardware. |

Many conditions - for example size - probably easiest is some passive, low profile heatsink for modern CPU - as 68060 doesn't dissipate too much power accordingly to modern standards then i would focus on notebook / thin client / home PC solutions (50..65W more than enough probably).

Yeah but how do you secure them on the 68060? There are no mounting clips like in AMD/Intel sockets of that era and later.
Adhesive pads are risky when the CPU board is mounted vertically, should the heatsink fall on other hardwares. |

I'm using this heatsink bracket clip kit from Mouser and it works really well although it's not perfect and does require some modification/cutting to the plastic bracket to make it fit.

In past on ceramic chips like 68060 they use heatsink with flat spring clip so it can be hooked just under package edge - can't recall model but it was on 486/pentium (up to mmx) time quite common way to hold heatsink in place especially in flat, fanless designs. Nowadays i would try to use wire spring going to PCB edges. Of course you can use thermoconductive glue. |
