Individual Computers Competition Pro

Dear EAB,

Are these joysticks any good? I know they come in both 9-pin Atari and modern USB versions, and my SpeedLink USB joystick has just died (three switches have given up on me in as many minutes after 7 years of on/off usage). How are they, and are they worth the cash? (I have a 9-pin to USB adaptor, so I might just get the 9-pin version)

Yours sincerely,
Swevicus.

I have USB one, they are very stiff even after few years and I don't like these 2 tiny buttons near stick. It's not bad joystick but it's not good for me.

I know - maybe the 9-pin version might differ? (I just looked at the Individual Computers website and that's the only version they have on sale)

So, it's worth the Euros? It's worthy of being compared to the original model?

How about a good arcade stick instead?

Personally I prefer the originals (black and red). That a USB adapter and possibly a second button / auto fire mod makes it perfect. All of which are easy to ether make or find

The USB version comes with an awfully slow USB chip - it only sends input to the computer about 10 times per second, that's way too slow for fast arcade games - quick joystick movements often don't make it to the computer. If you want to buy one of these, always buy the 9-pin version, and then use an external adapter.

Other than the USB controller chip, both versions are identical. They got some improvements over the years, and the later models seem to be okayish. They're definitely not as sturdy as the original models though.

If you have a limited budget, the Compition Pro remake is probably your best choice. The alternatives would be Amigakit's Arcade Evolution (noname Arcade parts) or the Aracdeforge Retro Joystick available with either noname arcade parts or Sanwa arcade parts.

Building your own Stick using Arcade parts from Sanwa and a bit of wood might also be a nice DIY project.

That's on the cards (I accidentally bought the wrong parts - Seimitsu instead of Sanwa - and now I have to burn through my wallet again).

Competition Pro USB is too slow for playing Starquake (building platforms) and Rodland (killing enemies or my fairy is slightly retarded).

The upper (triangular) fire buttons on these new joysticks don't do autofire, do they? I don't even think this new model of the Competition Pro HAS said function.

I think autofire could reveal sluggish of this joystick. It's not very bad, just not for some games.
