Amazing work, tested on my 1200/030@50Mhz and 32MB of RAM. Smooth in default screenmode I get about 35 fps (1.40) and 25 (1,90) with the more taxing ones. Nice I hope to see it evolving fast in the full fledged engine it deserves and play on it.

Wow, runs great on my 1200 and managed to get it to work on my cdtv, slight issue though as it will only run if i turn off the cd drive (frees about 80k memory) but my cdtv does have 2mb chip and 8mb fast so this is slightly odd - maybe the game is using a specific area of memory? would it be possible to look at this and maybe then i could make a cdtv iso.

I'd imagine a port of doom better than the Sega Saturn got, at least

Actually, looking at the videos of how fast it is on the 1200, and knowing floor heights are coming, I do wonder if it would legit run Doom levels, I suspect it probably will (with new graphics obvs).

Well done, very impressive to see it run this well on a base A500

Long time I haven't played it but as I recall, you should be able "to jump forward" on some places.

Ultima Underworld was full 3d as far as I remember. It was very impressive at the time.

"full 3d" meaning you could also look up an down, jump, fly and swim and it supported multiple levels too I believe, but it was a primitive raycaster nonetheless. Wolf3D sacrificed a whole lot of that freedom for graphical accuracy and speed.

Wolfenstein doesn't come close to the Ultima Underworld engine and graphical accuracy of Ultima Underworld is just fine. But I believe the base configuration for both is a CPU generation apart. I just looked at some UU1 video and it looks like it still is a game worth playing today.

If I am not mistaken (hardware was obsolete faster than a lightning, but) I played UU on a 486DX2-66 BitD.

If you never tried it, give it a go. I have good memories playing it.
Same for Ultima Underworld 2.

Ultima Underworld was playable on a 386SX-40. I believe Wolfenstein could run on a 286, though.

UU1&2 were some of the games I envied my PC friend for but which I never played when I first got a PC years later. I only got to watch my friend play it...

Amiga's Underworld clone Trapped: Das Rad Von Talmar works just fine with 68020 28mhz.

Ultima Underworld is not a raycaster, the world is drawn using polygon rasterization. The only thing it has in common with Wolf3D is that the map is stored as a tilemap.

That's what I thought, it looks nothing like a raycaster.

Raycasters have loads of limitations, however they are super for Doom style games and they can be really fast, as shown by Dread.

If your 3D retro game does not require Frontier style rotations, then a raycaster is the way to go.

Hoping to see a raycaster racing game on the Amiga soon, I guess it depends on what access we will get to the Dread engine.

Runs buttery smooth on my A500 with a TF536, but I wanted to see how it would run on an unaccelerated machine, so I tried the ST version on my 1040ST, which has a stock CPU.
I was floored with how well it ran on the ST! No hardware sprites, no blitter, yet still very playable with a respectable framerate. I actually love the Atari ST music too - not something I'd ever thought I'd say!
Amazing, incredible work!

I finally ran Dread on my A500 as it is intended. I was running the A500 stock except for the CPU which is an 68010. Would that make any difference? I guess with unrolled loops it doesn't. Anyways, Dread runs very well on the A500. In fact, although it is noticeable that the framerate is a bit lower, it is still "good enough" that it doesn't really detract from the gameplay. And I think the gameplay is fantastic! I read lots of comments on the various youtube videos about how it is not really doom, no floor textures, etc, etc. I think that's all bullshit because to me it "feels" like doom. The textures, level design, outdoor vs indoor (Which is VERY nice). It's just well done!

PS: My 6 year old son loves it and completed the level in "normal" setting

Even if I showed the "on work" video to my mini-Godzillas that are a bit bigger, I would not put a PEGI "6" on the box for that kind of game .
