Is A/UX supported by shapeshifter
Hi as the titles says does shapeshifter or even fusion supports Apple Unix OS? I'll definitely try it out but if some of you already know that it's not working will save me an hassle.

What are you trying to achieve? A/UX runs natively on the Amiga, what would you use Shapeshifter for?

A/UX stands for Apple Unix OS, it's unix with on top macos 7 GUI and a compatibility layer that supports normal 68k os 7 apps.

Ah, okay. Because in the first post you wrote "Amiga Unix OS", which also exists and was the OS for the Amiga 3000UX.

In theory, Shapeshifter should be able to use a Quadra 700 ROM and A/UX should be installable. I say in theory because I've never tried it in Shapeshifter, but I did have a Quadra 650 that ran A/UX and it's very finicky about hardware.

No, Shapeshifter can not run A/UX.
How emulators like Shapeshifter work is that they runtime patch the Toolbox ROM which contains the hardware abstraction layer for the MacOS (not unlike the Kickstart). A/UX is bootstrapped from inside MacOS but afterwards directly talks to the Mac hardware. To run A/UX you thus need to emulate the actual Mac Hardware, which very few Mac emulators ever bothered to do. ...In addition to that you would need to emulate the MMU as A/UX will need exclusive use to it, which would be problematic to say the least when trying to run as a light virtualization system such as Shapeshifter. That said, Duckbill (-> https://github.com/pruten/shoebill ) Can run A/UX as it emulates a Mac II. But running that on Amiga is unreasonable. |
