Game Icons from HOL images
Frogs Pygm game icons are quite superb and gave me an idea for a new project in 2004.
What if we use the images in HOL to create game icon packs, which eventually can be placed online, even in HOL itself. Imagine being able to get hold of a WHDload pack, visiting HOL and downloading quality icons for it's drawer and startup. We'll have to set a standard in terms of colours/programs used, format and size. As a suggestion, each pack could contain: Newicon Drawer image (Square-pixel/high res) Newicon Game image (Square-pixel/high res) Oldicon drawer image (PAL/NTSC/low res) Oldicon game image (PAL/NTSC/low res) Some advice from Frog will probably be useful, if he's still around. Any takers? It would be "only when I'm bored no pressure to do stuff" type thing - all we'd need is an upload area and a few posts here reporting what's been done. i'm still here
Unfortunately i've no so much time to do such a project. i still do icon from time to time for some request from the WHDLoad team but no more. I think you can already use icons from http://www.amigagames.com/gameicons.info/ (all are in 120x96 pixels) and of course you can freely use my Pygmicons (another pack is available on aminet, if RCK is interested he can add it to the download page) As most icons use Title screen + ingame screen they shouldn't differ from (re)doing a new one using HOL pic. Making a different drawer for each game sound a bit crazy for me as it should ask more time and i don't think it's so useful as lot of ppl use different drawer. Well it's just my opinion. Anyway there's still lot of games that need a good icon, why not start with them. |

Hey Frog, thanks for the reply. Your game Icons are excellent and I think Rck should add that extra pack.
The idea behind doing standard sized picture drawers is that when you have a directory full of games (say Games/A) it's nice to see identifiable drawers rather than just the bland default set. Problem is performance and chipram, especially if you're not using WinUAE. It was just a suggestion for something different. I agree we could start work on the undone games, but it would be nice to have a standardized set. Plus there aren't many AMiga related projects these days for people to keep the memory of the original machine alive. I don't expect people to dedicate time to this like HOL CAPS etc, just drop a post from time to time when they're bored. Guess the main aim is just keep some active projects going on this board, even at a snails pace. I can see this going.........nowhere. If it fails to inspire anyone, at least we have your excellent icons Frog! |

Well i think the standard set you're asking already exists. In the fear to say again the same thing, icons available on GameIcons are in 120x96, it became a standard as now most of ppl who makes icon for WHDLoad used this size.
Why not follow this standard. I wish you good luck in this project and lot of pleasure for this new year To RCK : if you're interested to add it to your download page, direct link from aminet for the 2nd pack (.readme include the content of the archive) http://www.aminet.net/pix/gicon/PygmIconsGL_D2.lha http://www.aminet.net/pix/gicon/PygmIconsGL_D2.readme http://www.aminet.net/pix/nicon/PygmIconsNX_D2.lha http://www.aminet.net/pix/nicon/PygmIconsNX_D2.readme http://www.aminet.net/pix/gicon/PygmIconsGL_G2.lha http://www.aminet.net/pix/gicon/PygmIconsGL_G2.readme http://www.aminet.net/pix/nicon/PygmIconsNX_G2.lha http://www.aminet.net/pix/nicon/PygmIconsNX_G2.readme |

Frog, that collection is great however many of the icons on that site aren't compatible with Newicons - they're os3.5+ specific.
I'm a workbench 3.0/3.1 junkie - classic A1200 all the way! What did you use to convert yours between formats? I think the latest release of Scalos supports OS3.5+ icons, if so it's not much of an issue. Forgetting about the directory idea (as you can easily use the standard icon image info as a drawer if you want), it still would be nice to have separate packages for WHDload games containing oldicon, newicon and os3.5 icons. Using my ClassicWB setup in WinUAE, it literally takes seconds to drag a HOL pics over to some old/new icon creation utilities. Looks like no one is interested anyway. The current collection of icons must be doing their job. :hoo Right, time to move on EAB peeps......... |

for conversion from Coloricon to Newicon, i used Convert35Icon by Rafal Mania (as describe in my readme http://www.aminet.net/util/sys/Convert35Icon.lha
The only problem is that in fact newicon shouldn't do more than 93x93 pixel. Don't ask me how Convert35icon do the job... it's possible but not without danger. A coloricon shouldn't do more than 20-22ko or when converting it to newicon your system could crash. Less color a coloricon used, more luck you've to convert it without any risk. Any other work on the icon are done using PPaint. I used Art Effect to resize Title pic but ADPro or any other Photoshop's like should do the job. Have fun ! PS : You can find an update of Convert35icon now renamed to http://www.aminet.net/util/sys/ConvColorIcon.lha but now it respect the 93x93 newicon restriction. |

Thanks Frog, you've been most helpful. I'm already using quite a few of your newicons on some WinUAE A4000 config HDFs as I'm sure others are too.
I'll make some new sets for my A1200 as and when I have a need and spare time. |

Well I've started making Icons from HOL images and it literally takes seconds to do each set. Drag (or use a shell command for lots of pics) the PNG pic over to image2icon and jobs a good 'un. Then dumped into the lettered drawers. As I mentioned above, this will be an ongoing project as and when I have time.
They're obviously not as good as frogs, but they'll still make a good addition to the classic WB icon drawer for all you WHDload freaks using standard WB3. Last edited by Bloodwych; 20 January 2004 at 19:26. |
