heys DDNI,

i have a dvd rom on my OS3.5 and it reads DVDs as easly as CD's..

i am sure that OS3.1 does too but reports an incorrect disk size in the window (i could be wrong as i havent used it in a long loooong time).

@DDNI
There are a few different options for reading DVDs:

(a) the CDFS contained in OS 3.5/3.9 (IIRC the one in 3.1 won't do the job)

(b) possibly AsimCDFS (not sure about IDEFix; both are commercial)

(c) AllegroCDFS (only available with the purchase of Elbox's 4-way IDE adaptor; has full DVD UDF bridge support)

(d) DVD-RAM on Aminet (free and has full DVD UDF bridge support for DVD-ROM and -RAM)

The last two are your best options if you want to do something more than just read data DVDs on Amiga.

Did you try this or did you just quote the docs ? I tried many times to read different UDF formatted DVDs with AllegroCDFS but it sees only the ISO part.

With other DVDs it fails at the same places where CacheCDFS fails, too. So I doubt there is any UDF code in there.

There is not a single bit of disk-reading code in this archive, only programs to format DVDs with FFS or SFS. Nothing UDF related at all. Did you actually look at it ?

Do you actually know what UDF is ?

@Thomas
I've used DVD-RAM and it pretty much does what it claims it can do. I've used it to read and write to DVD-RAM. It also reads DVD-ROM movie disks just fine (and IIRC plays them via Frogger) unlike the other solutions I've tried and suggested (a and b). So yes, I know what I'm talking about because unlike you it's mostly based on experience. As for UDF.......yeh I know what it is and I figure quite a few others do here too.

Can't comment on how good AllegroCDFS is as I don't really use A1200s (nor do I own the 4-way adaptor), but I didn't say that I'd used it or any of the other things that I suggested.........just that if DDNI wanted to do a bit more than reading DVDs that something having support beyond ordinary CDFS support is required.

Got any more questions you want to ask Thomas or do you want to pontificate some more? You've offered people here advice more than a few times based on "theory" rather than your own experience and have been shown to be dead wrong. But what really gets on my nerves, though, is that you chastise people for asking what you think are obvious questions (in other words you think they are idiots for asking) or just assume that they've done something stupid to cause their problem (it's the kind of bad attitude that a a fair few people who work in tech support have these days). However, not a peep is heard out of you when your advice is incorrect (or causes problems)........no apologies and no admissions of being wrong. You've got a lot to learn about good manners and humility. Nuff said!

Apologies for my rant folks......now let's get back on-topic.

Ok you two thanks for the responses, even if Thomas' seemed somewhat abrasive toward DrBong!!
I hooked up my DVDROM to my buffered IDE interface. Usually the DVD discs are reported as NDOS. This time however, it seemed to read the Joliet type DVD discs Ok. I use WB3.1 with Bloodwychs CWB and IDEFIX97. Obviously no joy with UDF though. Seems I might get away without any other software....
