Why?
Surely as time goes on there will be less amiga stuff around since nobody is making them anymore and prices will rise, supply and demand... |

But the second hand supply is not people selling due to upgrades. The sales are due to lifestyle changes. Which goes in cycles.
Previous increases in Amiga prices were due to Amiga owners getting a job for the first time, having an excess of cash and being able to buy that "super Amiga" they never could when they were kids. But most Amiga users are now in their mid 30's. They are getting married and their wives do not want Amiga stuff around. Condemning it to the Attic or Ebay. Certainly not encouraging them to buy more. Those that married early are probably having their second kid around now and have no spare change to spend on Amiga guff. I predicted another swing in five or so years when Amiga users kids will be old enough to use computers and demand goes up due to the "scalextric" factor. And then a swing downwards again when ex-Amiga users parents retire and sell their family homes (along with the contents of the attic) which will flood the market. Maybe I have misread how old the average Amiga users is. Perhaps they are a lot older. Last edited by alexh; 15 June 2009 at 09:18. |

Fact is, the amount of amiga hardware and software available will decrease due to damage/age, causing prices to rise higher due to rarity and what not.
There will be fluctuations in the price, but on average the price will always slowly increase. You cannot predict anything concerning what people will do with their amiga stuff, there are a wide range of amiga users, old, young, married, not married, with kids, with no kids, with money, with no money, etc. You cannot predict something that has so many variables. "Those that married early are probably having their second kid around now and have no spare change to spend on Amiga guff." - I mean, come on! You seem to think most will get married and those that did get married early will be having at least 1 child by now, how do you know this?!?!? Maybe they are rich and have plenty of money to spend on their kids and their amiga stuff.... Anyway, I hope I don't sound aggressive or anything, it just seemed like you were talking out your... |

Clearly not everything Amiga-related is getting more expensive: Look at how cheap Amiga 500s are nowadays; it's all a matter of supply and demand.
I have a feeling that new users (who never had an Amiga before) are buying Amigas now, people who are interested in retro gaming and who enjoy that 80s 16-bit look. And since A1200, due to PCMCIA-CF and internal IDE, along with whdload and a memory upgrade is pretty much the ideal Amiga gaming machine, it's not surprising that prices for those (and especially accelerator cards) are increasing. Of course, spending that much money on an SX32 when you could instead buy an Amiga 1200 with CD-Rom, that's just dumb. |

Skateblind,
I Don`t think Alexh is talking out of his Ar*se, I would bet that the majority of Amiga nuts are original Commodore users of the late 80`s / 90`s, probably upgrading from the C64. These users ( Me included ) ARE in their mid 30`s. Statistics show that the majority of people in this age group are married with two children. There is a lot of interest in Amigas & retro from younger users now, so lets hope this continues, but as us kids of the 80`s get older, the interest in Amigas may fade and prices drop - look at the value of a C64 - virtually nothing ! I`m not saying that this is definitive but it would be interesting to do a poll on this, and not just from users in this forum. Of course - I may be talking out of my A*rse also ! |

I am sorry, unless you have done a few months of research at least, then you cannot say any of this with conviction. If I was going to be anal I would ask for your evidence of all these FACTS.
You also presume people will do certain things with their amiga hardware at certain points of their lives and I say presume because there is no way you could have evidence of what people will do with their amiga stuff at certain points in their lives. You make a LOT of presumptions about what people will do when there is absolutely now way you could know that. There is no research out there on what people do with their amiga stuff at any given situation. Anyhoo, it has been a good discussion, even if I have been at odds with everything you have said. |
