How to save game in Speedball 2?

If you start a new league or cup game, there is a "SAV" button which saves the game. However, once you actually play a match and then it returns to this screen, the "SAV" button is now blank. Therefore, the only time you can save the game is right at the start of the league/cup, which seems to defeat the purpose :-D

I tried the floppy and WHDLoad versions, they are both like this. Nothing mentioned about it in the manual, it implies that it should always be possible to save from that screen, in a league or cup. So does anyone know why that button is blank once the season has actually commenced?

EDIT: I have found that the "SAV" button only appears every 4 rounds, ie. after the 4th, 8th etc. rounds. Presumably this is intentional but it is not mentioned anywhere.
