Games that had you hooked by their story/world
Its hard to remember but try to remember which games had you really interested initially in terms of the world they were set in or the story (doesn't matter if the actual game was crap - more interested in the box art, story on box or manual, title screen + intro)
The chaos engine http://www.mobygames.com/game/chaos-engine Tusker http://www.mobygames.com/game/tusker Darkseed http://www.mobygames.com/game/dark-seed Beneath a steel sky http://www.mobygames.com/game/beneath-a-steel-sky Dragon's breath http://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=1738 Eye of the beholder http://www.mobygames.com/game/eye-of-the-beholder Shadow of the beast 2 http://www.mobygames.com/game/shadow-of-the-beast-ii edit: Can I change this thread a little bit. I had this idea maybe you could look at games that were good and games that sucked and find patterns. Then you could use these rules to make your own games (if u make hobby games) better. I realise now it is going to take me too long looking at these games I haven't played. So could you also add why you thought the game had a good story and atmosphere, and any ideas you think about what makes a good game story/atmosphere in general. thx Last edited by sharprm; 24 January 2010 at 12:17. |

@Jope: I only had a pirated version did marble madness have a good box art or something?
Thx for the replies I will look up these games I haven't played. Can I change this thread a little bit. I had this idea maybe you could look at games that were good and games that sucked and find patterns. Then you could use these rules to make your own games (if u make hobby games) better. I realise now it is going to take me too long looking at these games I haven't played. So could you also add why you thought the game had a good story and atmosphere, and any ideas you think about what makes a good game story/atmosphere in general. thx As an example, The Chaos Engine has a story that could be made into a novel maybe. Isn't it a bit like Frankenstein and 2001 a space odyssey? They spend this huge picture showing how victorian era people would photograph a dinosaur. Banshee I didn't like even though it has nice graphics (I only played it on the emulator so I may be bad judge ...) and the story is really unbelievable. So maybe the rule could be make the world seem grounded in our own world. For atmosphere I don't know. Hired guns, shadow of the beast 2, darkseed, dragon's breath, they are all really bleak + depressing. Maybe that makes a good game. |

Hooked into the world eh? Well Monkey Island would list at the top then for me. Dungeon Master and Captive following closely though. The Valhalla series also had me immersed deeply.

Gothic series, (especially Gothic 3), Secret of the Silver Blades, and Droyan, a little and obscure Korean RPG... it was funny and with a nice story. The end sequences was really cool.

I loved games that had big manuals full of story. You could read the manuals while your brother was hogging the Amiga
K240 had interesting background information in the manual even though the game had no story at all. You got the impression that there was more to the world than you saw in the game. Beneath a Steel Sky had a good story. I played it only recently on Nintendo DS. I did some detective work and discovered that the Union City was a future Sydney, Australia. You can work this out from the names of underground railway stations (St James and Museum). I had thought these stations were used in The Matrix for the fight scene between Neo and Agent Smith, but apparently it was a set built at Rozelle railway yards. Same city, though. |

for most addictiveness - cannon fodder without a shadow of a doubt. That game was the best I've ever played and still is to this day. Nothing comes close

The Chaos Engine - I think theres a lot of potential in this story and the characters are great.
Cadaver - This has a good back story if you look into it. You really get a feel for some of the characters you read about while playing through the game, and most of them you never actually meet. The Beast games - All of them have a very rich atmosphere and unique worlds. I think theres a lot of potential for more story in these too. |

Another interesting background story has the weird manic insane game Burton bird (one of my most favourite). Just read it in the game, really funny.
