Very new to Amiga & some questions of the hardware

First apologizes if this is in the wrong section.

I’ve returned to the Amiga arena for the first time since my very early childhood when my father had a Amiga 500, very found memories. What prompted me to return was when I discovered that AmigaOS’s are still be produced.

But I have some questions on my return (be warned im full of ignorance on the latest Amiga developments), firstly apart from the cult followers, who is the new Amiga OS aimed at? As to buy new hardware to run it it seems quite expensive, and secondly the hardware I have seen states its ‘customized G3’s or G4’s’, so would the new OS 4.0 run on non-customized G3/G4’s, i.e. Apple computers.

I would love to be able to get my hands on some of the newer amiga OS’s, but failing the actual Amiga hardware option is there any x86 ports of the new OS ?

Thanks for the time in reading and replying, its great to see that theres still a following for Amiga.

Cheers

I've been hoping for that one for a while, no dice on the x86 port. They keep developing for AmigaOne's when there's not much of a market there for it, imo. Some people might disagree with this opinion but whatever.

You can check out AROS. Or simply use WinUAE.

There isn't much of a market if you can't even buy an AmigaOne...

Would this be a good time to suggest AmigaOS4 to be released as Freeware for the x86/x86-64 platform? :look

THat way, the developers still retain the copyrights, but it'll spread quicker because people would want to try it on their current hardware, instead of waithing 5 more years for AmigaOne to be pronounced dead.

In short: The Amiga is dead. Enjoy the emulation.

There was an atempt to make a AmigaOS 4.0, but the OS was\is limited to a special AmigaOne hardware. The company that made it went bankrupt. So it's impossible to get both hardware and software. All attempts to make new hardware have failed, all supposed alternatives out there are frauds or failiures with no chance of success. The only company that can issue a new license for new hardware, Amiga Inc., has repeatedly showed no interest in doing it.

The last version of Workbench is 3.9, it runs fine on emulation and in the old Motorola 68k family, A1200, A4000, et al.

Use Morphos instead :P So much fun using a real powerful "Amiga".

And Ultron, The OS4 team is still not dead, although not in best shape maybe hehe..

Hi all, thanks for the reply's.

Well from what im reading here and else where, does seem this problem with hardware is pretty damaging/limiting to trying to make progress. But maybe i was attempting to relive boyhood memories, still a shame to the Amiga story though. I'm looking into AROS, but still very much work in progress, although positive to see something going on.

And i take it as the amithlon project is dropped theres no where to purchase it ?
