converting amiga 500 notepad files to pc text files

Hi everybody,

I have two amiga 500 diskettes containing several notepad short stories written around 1990's. I don't have the technology to do the job myself, so I can send you the actual diskettes by snail mail and you can email me back the notepad files as pc text files. You can keep the diskettes. Thanks

I can try to recover the files for you. Depending on the state/condition of the floppy disks, it may or may not be successful.

PM me if you are still interested.

I am always doing this kind of thing with my old stuff as I find long-forgotten disks, been scanning through thousands of old disks from my own personal stuff so have hit pretty much every issue and workaround. So always happy to help if needed.

@ElectroBlaster

I'm always interested in how others restore/recover/image their floppy disks. What is your typical workflow and what tools and techniques do you use?

Pretty much any hardware and software tool I can get my hands on! I assess the physical state of the disk first. Is it dirty/moldy, does it smell bad. If its dirty/moldy I will throughly clean the magnetic surface with isopropanyl but normally I just give it a quick clean.

I will use qtip thingies and kitchen paper, even gone as far as breaking disks apart to get the magnetic media out.

When attempting reads/writes/archiving I use any combination of these:

Kryoflux
Supercard Pro
Catweasel mk1, mk2, mk3 and mk4
Arduino Floppy Reader/Writer

and of course a real Amiga, A1200 or A4000 depends whatever I have powered up at the time.

Sometimes I have hit a disk that is not only dirty, but needs to be read over and over and over until it finally created a 1:1 copy. Can only assume the magnetic force was wearing out? not sure whats its called lol.

Had this happen with a VERY old Atari ST disk until I got the image perfectly.
The disk is nowhere else! never did find an image of it on the web or archived.

I also want to get a Greaseweasle (think thats how its spelt?) im pretty much into all this imaging lark, also done 5 1/4 disks, old pc stuff, Atari ST etc.

My flux reader/writer of choice is Greaseweazle - I highly recommend it! Developed and supported by Keir Fraser, of Amiga Test Kit and FlashFloppy fame.

I pair this up with HxC Floppy Emulator Software to provide a visual view of the image - which makes it easier to see whether the image is good or not; and to be able to compare with known good images.

I need to get my hands on a Greaseweazle! I have a couple HxC's floating about aswell so teaming that software is something I would like to try out.

You're welcome. Glad your disks got here eventually after nearly 1 month!

Enjoy the nostalgia!
