A better no filter screenshot, the "reference" shot.

Menace with Super2xSAI filter on

Menace with SuperEagle filter on...

I am not going to test some others, guys .

If you also find these last two ugly, I dare to say :
It's a case of Amiga games not being suited for additional antialiasing or incomplete implementation of these filters in WinUAE.

Delauvive, which resolution do you use to display the game ?
Because with hq2x everything upper than 640x480 did slowdown with winuae 1.4.6.
What's the name of the game ? I'm sure i can make it work perfectly with winuae 1.4.4 and winuae 1.4.6 hq2x.
For me toni can delete every filters now ! because d3d filters are ugly !
And the old version of filters are unusable now too slow and are displayed differently and old hq2x became less good.
I know that toni don't care about filters and that's why i said nothing anymore about it, i understant if he doesn't care he choose the easiest way to implement it : d3d hq2x and others , even if it's less good for the eyes but it's really faster than old hq2x.

From reading older posts on the subject, Toni didn't really insisted that those filters were very polished in WinUAE, if I ain't mistaken, so may be their implementation is not up there with how it's done in SNES emulators.

It took me a while to dig that part of the documentation was made of the changelog, so obviously you know more than I do about the different stages filter implementation went through.

This said, I found a reply from Toni rather funny in the light of comparing sprites treatment, although I am not sure is was intended as a joke :

Super2xSAI seems rather lively to me, what's your go ?

My best which: toni come back to old hq2x filter like in winuae 1.4.4 or 1.4.6 and why not keep d3d filters but really they are not so great but faster for those who has little configurations.
After toni will do what he wants, and i don't know what is possible to do or not.
myself now, i use hq2x with winuae 1.4.4 and null filter with last winuae.

Scanlines or null filter definitly rule. The other filters look like digital blasphemy. I will call the inquisition for that.

mmmh, doesn't make much sense to me, but after all some of these filters are included because of you . May be you can (politely) ask (harrash ) Tony to implement HQ-Lite.

Now, let's answer your questions :
  • The game is Menace, a great R-Type-like stylish shooter from Psygnosis
  • Resolution in full-window is 656x496

Why don't you use a proper resolution like 640x512, which is the double native Amiga LowRes resolution.

Because that would be sensible. And we know that he doesn't like doing that.

@R-N
There's no such thing as an Amiga native resolution barely a nominal PAL one, Toni's words.

Well, obviously, I won't be able to capture it in action for something else than smoothing the edges of MSX games sprites. I'll see what I can do, may be next week.

Then call it the "most widely used" resolution in lowres Amiga games (90%+), if it makes you feel more comfortable.

And by the way
656x496 is a LowRes listed as (*) recommended in WinUAE

I proposed two A4000 from my custom config. to replace the QuickConfig one, and up to these day, they haven't been challenged (except they might not have cycle-exact enabled), they're based on datasheets I looked upon of course.

No 640x512 in there, so my guess is it's not the best pick.

Wrong, because the screenshot lists only your default Windows resolutions. Create a 640x512 Windows resolution and then it's "recommended" and selectable too.

You are surely aware that the resolutions are host related and that indeed 640x512 is way more common than a '640+16x480+16' one.

The best is to create the exact double resolution of the original game display.
But for the moment i can't manage to do it my monitor doesn't like specials displays, even 640x512 doesn't work with my monitor.

You don't like following links, do you ?

Apparently a faster (experimental, promising) HQ filter, which seems to be an Open-MSX exclusive, but as the licence is GPL it shouldn't be too bothersome for Toni to grab it from the source code, and adapt it to WinUAE.
