Super League 2021: Round 8 - CarVup

Welcome back to the super league. Hope everyone is feeling refreshed. As an added incentive for taking part, the winner of this round gets to choose the year we use for round 11, out of the available choices. I will contact the winner by PM.

It's a second appearance this year for developers Core Design, but the first time CarVup has been in the league. A colourful platformer inspired by the arcade game City Connection. If you wait on the title screen it shows some instructions. And don't forget - the car is called Arnie.

25 years later I've found where Charlie the Chimp stole its (non-farty) sound effects from.

That series inspired me to try AMOS programming back in the day. I enjoyed the gameplay, too, so this should be fun.

The bonus seems to give a lot more points than the regular levels.

Hey Arc. Now you've given me the urge to check out Charlie Chimp. Didn't know it was similar to this. And CarVup is pretty new to me. Only tried it quite recently. Just the sort of game I like to discover. Quick and arcadey and kinda addictive.

Seems you've gotta learn the enemy patterns a bit coz I keep making the same dumb mistake on level 3 (?) where I jump right away into death.

Couldn't resist another go. aca0808 put some tips on lemon and the way you get the 'extra' letters is really hard, although I did manage to do it once. You have to leave one dot not lit up and a letter will appear somewhere on the level. Trying for a second extra life got me killed a few times.

Lots of weird bonuses in this. I found the big multicolour things in spooky levels can be collected for points. Apparently so can enemies that have been turned into carrots.

Slowly painting the hi-score table.

I'm starting to get the hang of the weapons. The bumper is particularly good, free collisions until it wears off.

I didn't find this in the manual, just the WHDLoad readme, but the Z key stops horizontal movement in mid-air. I'd be lying if I said I've mastered it but panic stops have saved my butt on more than one occasion.
