Amiga - how do you store your stuff?

I'm talking from an Emulation point of view here...

I had an AMiga 500 and I had one of those giant glass-like boxes with about 300+ floppies, (ok,,, most were pirated, but some originals) , I guess this may also include non-emulated software too, but i'm mainly focusing on software emulation.

With all the software that we download, games/and or applications, mags etc... one cannot fit on a single Duel Layer disc, as most people who *really* enjoy the Amiga, would probably have at least 1Gig+ easily..

Whats more convient for you for storage of this ? external hard drives, NAS ? or do you actually have multiple discs (single/multiple 4.7/8.4Gig discs).

Also, talking about long term storage too.... (including any backups you may also do)

Why burn stuff to dvd when 1TB hd's are so cheap these days

9TB neat, but off course that would be more than one hard drive.

What i'm getting is, how do people manage this stuff ? Do they carry two, three or four hard drives round with them, plugging them in (when needed), and how do you manage backups, (assume , you have backups of these)

Yeah their 9 1TB externals, mainly for storage/backups, my main emulators that I use most, I back up to a 64gb usb stick for safe keeping.

Like Kitty says, no point in spending time archiving them all to DVD. Today your structure is perfect tomorrow, with your new 50 additions, it'll be all messed up again.

Also what I do every year is buy 9 more hds, transfer everything over to the new and sell the old hds on ebay, that way its less likely you will ever lose any data.

Just make sure you got backups

I have a total storage space of 3.75 TB spread across varied drives. of course this is not all Amiga stuff :P

I'm using an internal 2TB HD in my PC for all my Amiga stuff which has backuped on an external USB Drive.
New incoming stuff will also be backuped every week by synchronizing these two hard drives.

EDIT: Of course I ment TB instead of GB!

I just store it on my server, which I then access via ftp from my Amiga and Amithlon box.
I do master back-ups every now and again to a bunch of blu ray discs just in case 'cos Ive so much "rare" stuff that cant be easily found again that I dont want to risk losing it all.

I have 120GB SSD for host system

2 x 1TB external 2.5" harddrives (one acts as backup).

Amiga/Enulation wise I only have around 800MB's worth.

At last count I had 800GB of data. Need a tidy out soon

I think it is important that backups are kept in hard drives rather than optical media. optical media deteriorates fast and becomes unreliable after a bunch of years, I never thought them as usable backup storage mediums.

I used to have backups on CDs which I then transferred to DVDs (with some data loss) and now I have in hard drives because it's a lot more reliable. A hard drive put away, stored safely, will last more than a bunch of CDs, DVDs or BDs. The declining prices on storage also make this option economically possible nowadays. Anybody can have a home made NAS and pile up HDDs.

I see that mentioned a lot, and quite frankly I find it silly.
Yes optical discs deteriorate, but it doesnt happen over night. Typically it'll last the length of the mediums lifetime.

Doing both is a better bet. Ive had harddrives die on me and have lost TBs of data 'cos of it.
Have one or 2 blu ray discs die is a lot less painful.

Ultimately though "best" is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone who's content with the way they have things setup/stored will be convinced their choice is the best.

I have magnetic media that is still lasting over 20 years of age. When you don't use it, its life extends a lot. of course if you are going to use teh hard drive every d ay, it will be prone to crashing.
My CDs started to deteriorate after 6 years. The DVDs, likewise. I lost data due to slight CD errors. Ok, it was, let's say, 10% of the backup total, but it is still data loss.

Passing stuff from flakey optical media to less flakey optical media sounds silly to me when I can have ONE hard drive with everything, tucked away safely which will last a LOT longer than optical media and, with today's costs, it's really affordable.

My A600's 30MB HD is still alive after 20 years. I assume it is because I have stoped using it like 10 years ago.

Sure, I have really old harddrives too that are still working. I also have newer drives that have exploded. Ive got cds that work fine after nearly 20 years, and blu ray discs that died after a few months.

There's no absolutes with data storage, which is why I store everything I have on harddrive and back-up what I deem the most important 500 or so gig of data once a year or so.

Yeah, doubling the backups is ALWAYS a good idea, no matter your choice of medium.

I have 4.35Gb of data.....

Maybe I too should have a clear out, but I just can't do it

EDIT: Strange, back in the day I had a 209Mb HDD which was more than ample, I guess the adf's are being stored via HDD now, so that'll probably be part of the reason, still 4.35Gb is a tad large for Amiga data :s
