Icaros Desktop 1.2 ready for download

This is an impressive release, largely due to the ADF support. Those wanting a portable Amiga might want to check it out. Heck, anyone that runs a virtual machine (VirtualBox, VMWare, VirtualPC, etc) might want to download the live CD and boot it up, just for kicks.

For those that have no idea what Icaros is:
Icaros Desktop is a pre-configured AROS desktop environment for the PC platform, distributed on a bootable live-DVD running on real hardware or in a virtual machine. The AROS Research Operating System is a open source lightweight, efficient and flexible desktop operating system, aiming at being compatible with AmigaOS 3.1 at the API level, while improving on it in many areas.

Anyway, the official press release:

-----------------

Source: http://vmwaros.blogspot.com/2009/12/...-download.html

It's been a long time since our latest "point release" (v1.1), and now I am proud to announce the immediate availability of the new one. Version 1.2 introduces lots of new programs, features and graphic enhancements, leveraging Icaros Desktop to a new level of realiability and user experience and so on (please insert any attractive marketing stuff you like here, I'm just too tired to do so). Seriously, there's really much to discover in this new release. Retro-gamers will surely love AmiBridge's brand new ADF support, which allows playing old Amiga games and demos straight from their ADF files. Just double click on them, answer to a pair of simple questions, and you'll be ready to play again your favourite classics! But AmiBridge has introduced also some enhancements for workbench applications: from now on, AROS and AmigaOS pointers will be syncronized under Janus-UAE (thanks to Oliver!), and brave people can even discover its latest steps toward full integration (beware: it might be still unstable). GeForce card users may like to test their hardware with GLExcess and some other MESA (OpenGL) demos running with Gallium 3D, an accelerated graphic framework currently being ported to AROS. Again: it's w.i.p.-state code only, it will work under some precise conditions and only with GeForce 3, 4, FX, 6 and 7 cards, not with models that are just too old or too recent. Compatibility will be extended in a (hopefully near) future to other cards, but not for now: take it as a demo only, and in the Live! version only (there was no space for it on Light, sorry). Thanks to ZuneARC, AROS (and Icaros) finally got a proper way to handle archive files: so you'll be able to manage zip, tar, bz2, lha, rar and other archives with a single, powerful GUI. And, obviously, Icaros Desktop includes also new games and applications. There's even a demo of the first commercial game for AROS, BOH. Moreover, if you have a netbook and a external DVD-ROM unit, there are good news for you: you'll be able to install Icaros Desktop on your little laptop, making it a fairly good Amiga-like computer. You won't get wi-fi and sound for now, but there are really good chances that everything else will be supported. Last but not least, Damir has created some really nice decoration themes for Icaros, and your distribution now includes also a new collection of desktop wallpapers. Enjoy!

There aren't any wireless drivers yet, but lately there have been a few new ethernet drivers, so it's possible one of those will work with your EeePC.

I've been running Icaros on an Acer laptop as my main OS for a few months now, it's got everything I need so I haven't even needed to boot into Linux for some time now (the only other OS on my PCs since Haiku won't boot).

Whats the acer model of your laptop? and does sound work on it.
That and the ethernet are the only things stopping me using it.

It's an Acer Aspire 3610, it runs in 1280x800, has working sound and music through AHI, USB works through Poseidon, Ethernet works in ArosTCP... basically everything except wireless works fine. Galium3D should be out soon which supports the Intel GPU so I'll finally be able to play Eternal Lands (the only 3D MMORPG for Amiga systems at the moment) with full shader support for extra lush graphics.

I can't believe I used to hate the laptop, I called it a craptop. Back when it ran Winblows it was unbearably slow, and when running Ubuntu it wasn't much better. But with Aros it's quick and a pleasure to use!

I will transform soon my AMD Sempron Barebone (which is used by my mother and will be replaced by a EMACHINES small form PC) into a Icaros-AROS one Even I have a Soundblaster Live and a extra Nvidia card if something doesn't work! ^-^

I converted yesterday my Barebone into a Icaros (Amiga X86) machine. This is outstanding, using this system with a real machine. This is why I've just done a donation also... it's amazing... AMIGA X86, and it's real!!!

Regards

Salva

Will do, I have an E6400 (Dual Core) with 2GB of ram, I should be able to throw say at least 50% of my system to the emulation.

Does it support latest video cards ?, mine is an ATI 4870 (ATI 4800 series).

Maybe not, you can try to boot using ATI boot option. Otherwise VESA mode should definately work! (native)

In VE you always use VESA.

Trying to load Icaros..

Downloaded the VE version, added the new Virtual Machine in to Sun Virtual box, it loads the HDD file, and that pops up.

Ive never tried Virtual Box (only VMWare and QEMU),

someone on aros-exec.org will be more able to help you, i would assume its something easy to fix because many people are using Virtual Box.
