AROS as alternate OS

Just reading the March 2011 copy of APC (Australian Personal Computer) and there is an tech article about 10 Alternative Operating Systems. At number 3 is Aros.

Something for Amiga lovers.
You may have fond memories of the Amiga. The dazzling graphics and crisp sound (when PCs were faffing around with text mode and beeps), the super- fast multi-tasking, and the, er, lack of protected memory... Well, forget that last one. It was one of the all time, and it still has many fans today. AROS - the Amiga Research Operating System - is intensely fast. It apes the Amiga design, both superficially and with its inner workings, and is designed to be source compatible with AmigaOS 3.1 (software written for the old Amiga OS should only need a recompile to work). AROS has great potential as a light and fast OS for low-end netbooks and tablets.

Seems that article is doing the rounds ATM.

TechRadar had the identical description in 'their' top 10 about a month ago!

Actually the article originated from APC. As mentioned it was from the March issue (which was released in February). I read the article in APC a few weeks before it found its way to TechRadar, etc.
Nice to see some of the outside world is taking notice though

edit: ah, seems maybe I misread the 2nd post. I thought it was suggesting that APC copied it from elsewhere, but upon re-reading it doesnt necessarily suggest that.

Seriously, AROS can be an awesome OS with more people involved. Pretty much the Linu* could be if oriented to end user instead huge mainframes.

Linus must be revolving in his tomb... (if he is not dead, please someone shoot him)

Good to see AROS getting some attention. As mentioned by Rkauer, AROS could become an awesome OS, if only for home usage.

I have tinkered with AROS in the past, using virtual machines, and it has so much potential. I have considered buying a cheap netbook/notebook just to run it on.

Been thinking of putting AROS in next to XP on my P4 box. The HW in it are supported so it may prove to be a fun toy. If they'd only port CygnusEd for it then I'd be one happy camper. (:

You can install it to a usb pendrive now. I have it installed to a 2gb stick, dual booting with parted magic. The only downside for me is that it's not compatible with my wi-fi card (yet). I also have it installed to a second partition on my HD, controlled by Syslinux bootloader. Runs Amiga games, adf & whdload just fine.

Out of pure luck I managed to aquire an acer aspire one A150, the very same type of netbook that was used by the cluster developments guy! He bigged it up on a youtube video. I still have to get my arse in gear and try aros on it. How can I go about using it on a usb stick? I have a 4gb one sitting here doing nothing.

Download the Aros live iso and burn it to disk.

Boot from the CD and insert your USB stick

Click on InstallAros and choose USB to install to.

If I would make a partition in a new HD (500Gb) for Aros (the main OS will be Windows 7), how much Gb would you leave for it in that partition?

I think I will make another partition to install Amiga Forever as executable there, this one will be I think of 20Gb.

Mine are 2gb and include the 'Extras' option.

I have a problem installing to USB. I get all the way to running post install script and then nothing happens how long is this process supposed to take?. I'm using AROS broadway if that helps. Hope someone can help out as it looks great using the live cd but I want it on USB.
