That's because they both use the 9-Pin D-SUB. Also compatible with Atari 2600/7800/ST, Sega Genesis, C64, Amstrad, MSX, and TI-99/4A. Any others I am forgetting? Anyhow, I believe the patent belongs to Atari.

Yep, this is nothing unusual, some people also report those gamepad working with CD³² games on their A1200 (at least you can use 3 out of 4 buttons then) but I haven´t tested myself !

I used those pads for years until they were broken! They are extremely comfortable for left handed people like me, like just any gamepad. They do have just two buttons but it's more than enough for amiga games.

Sega Megadrive pads work too, at least the OFFICIA Lones. I have a Sega 6 button pad working A-OK, but I have an unbranded clone and it jsut fucks up on the Amiga (geos left when you press right, etc!). Though you can modify those to work.
The best thing about SMS and Genny pads is teh extra button |
