Strange Amiga 1200 floppy drive... PC drive converted to amiga?
Hello mateys,
since my A600 was dead (RIP ) I got a shiny A1200 to replace it. When loading a floppy, I noticed it had another activity led on it! I immediately thought of a PC drive converted to Amiga... So I decided to open the miggy (btw, it's a Rev 1D.1, it's a good rev?) and see the drive with my own eyes. Here are some pics: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/337/img0928.jpg http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2310/img0929o.jpg Is this drive good, or it'll have incompatibilities like the Escom A1200s, which had PC drives in them? Seeing I've also got a real Amiga drive from my old A600 (a Teac one) it'd be better to put that in? I recall it had a lot of difficulties reading some floppies of mine, but if it's more compatible, then I guess it's still better. Also another question... will this drive read HD formatted floppies? Thanks |

Looks converted. May cause problems.
Swap in the drive from your A600, check the motherboard whether it has the 2->34 wire in place on the underside of the internal floppy connector. It won't read HD disks at double capacity. |

Nope, there's no wire on the internal floppy connector. I guess the 2->34 wire hack was done directly on the drive? (I can see a gray wire going from one of the pins to another point in the first pic) Okay then, when my CF-to-IDE adapter will arrive, I'll also switch my drive, hoping that all the floppy reading problems I got on my A600 weren't cause from the drive itself Thanks again! |

The hack Jope is referring to is on the underside of the Amiga motherboard.

Mitsumi NCL016 426 180 and the IC just above it says: Mitsumi NCL017 426 <something unreadable because of glue?> If I can ask... Why are you asking me this? Maybe the Mitsumi drives have some kind of secret power/functionality? |
