PD coders that went on to release full priced games
I have had a quick scan through HOL (ie clicking on 3 PD games) and none of the coders released anything else never mind a full priced retail game.
Does anyone know of anyone that started out as nice guy giving away his/her hard work only to become a robbing git later on (of course I jest ) |

The coder of Desert Strike started off as a PD Coder, I 'think' he did either Tanx or Scorched Earth

Are you sure it's the same Guy? As HOL currently has entries for two different Gary Roberts.

The Vision boys started off releasing PD/shareware games like Cybernetix, Microbes etc then turned to churning out full price games like Woody's World, Seek and Destroy, Road Kill etc

I believe the guy that did Mr Wobbly Leg Versus The Invaders From Space was hired by one of the larger game developers (Gremlin? EA?) after being discovered in some magazine competition (I'm not entirely sure. It's a vague memory).
While not entirely a PD developer, Andy Davidson of Worms fame had written Total Wormage. Had it not been snatched up by Team 17, I would bet it would've been PD, given it was done towards the mainstream end of Amiga gaming (Around 95). I think Gareth Murfin, the developer of Gloom 3 started off in the PD shareware world. I recall seeing his stuff frequently on Amiga Format and CU Amiga CoverCDs. I can't recall if he created games but I know he did some software at the very least. I'm sure there's much more, but that's all I can recall off the top of my head. |

Off the top of my head, James Daniels/Apex Designs (Payback) started off as a PD coder. You can check out his softography here:
http://www.apex-designs.net/games.html Like Andy Davidson, Elton Bird (Super Tennis Champs + data disks) was lucky enough to have a PD game (Tennis Champs) picked up for commercial release: http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_artist=5154 Same deal with Austex Software. Uropa² was released as shareware before Vulcan signed the game up for commercial release. Before turning their hand to game development they were demo sceners also: http://www.austexsoftware.com/about.html Similarly, Twin Eagles Group released Gunbee F-99 as shareware before APC&TCP signed up the game: http://hol.abime.net/2808 Chaotic Byte (aka Dreamworlds) released Crossfire as PD, but went commercial with the sequel, Crossfire 2: http://hol.abime.net/cleanurl.php?fi...fire&x=54&y=18 Virtual Dreams (aka Fields of Vision) released T-Racer (shareware) before going on to bigger and better things with Breathless AGA: http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_developer=326 http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_developer=218 Paul Burkey did a reasonable apprenticeship as a PD/shareware coder before gaining commercial fame on the Amiga with games like Foundation, The Feeble Files and Simon the Sorceror 2: http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_artist=2625 Same deal with Mark Sheeky, who was a prolific PD/shareware coder before going commercial with games like Burnout, Sword and Genetic Species: http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_artist=48 Speaking of Genetic Species, a game demo was first released at The Gathering '96 by Danish scene group, Ambrosia. The main coder involved, Per Bloksgaard (Powdihacker/Ambrosia) formed Marble Eyes after it was picked up by Vulcan. He had to recruit a number of coders to complete the project. Among them were demo coders from the Loonies, Henrik Munther (Psycho/Loonies) and Aske Simon Christensen (Blueberry/Loonies). I've come up with a handful of examples, but I kid you not- there are many many many more! Last edited by DrBong; 16 March 2007 at 15:16. |
