SquirrelSCSI query.

Hi all

Just picked up a SquirrelSCSI. It was listed on eBay untested. Gave it a clean and plugged it into the A1200.

Is their any way I can test if the Squirrel is detected on the PCMCIA bus ? I don't have any scsi drive at the moment to hook up to it to test if it's working.

I tried running Prepcard but it reports nothing.

Need to know it detected on the PCMCIA port before I shell out on an scsi drive.

Yo Bromigo!

For the squirrel to work you need to install the drivers. I take it you have done that first?

Another method after installing the drivers is to use something like find device that comes with IDEFIX so it can check the squirrel device from the device driver that was installed. Apart from that you will need to take a chance and plug in a SCSI device like a Cd drive to check.

I don't think this is going to work with no scsi device attached, and I don't want to spend out on an scsi drive until I know 100% the interface is detected on the PCMCIA bus. Is their a way of probing the PCMCIA port with some compiled assembler code that can tell me if the interface is detected?

From my really rusty memory...
Maybe???
I think (??) most SCSI controllers themselves are an ID on the SCSI bus...
As a result, you should be able to scan the bus and see the controller.
That said, you would probably have to terminate the bus for that to work.
So you might need to add a terminator directly to the cable of the Squirrel.
And then hopefully the software (sorry, I don't remember how it works) will let you see the devices (in this case, just the controller) on the bus.

Good luck..

Most SCSI Cards/Controllers are detected as SCSI Device 7.

Correct; the SquirrelSCSI identified as unit 0 when a single scsi.device is attached. Only problem is I have no scsi drives to attach to test.

Nope... Scanned bus with no devices attached using SCSI Mounter (SquirrelSCSI.device copied to DEVS. In SCSIMounter window I get enquiry failed with squirrel plugged in and also when it is removed.

Squirrel automatically identifies as unit 0 when one device is connected. Like I said I have no scsi devices to test... I need to find a way to test the interface is working before spending out on a scsi CDROM drive.

Yep, I would expect that to fail unless you terminate the SCSI bus.
You'd need to add a SCSI terminator to the end of the cable to successfully test it..

So placing a terminator onto the end of the squirrel with no scsi devices attached is going to work right and allow me to diagnose if the interface is working using scsi mounter? I've gone and ordered a terminator from eBay). A waiting game now until it arrives through the post so I can test

I've got a 1200 and a SCSI drive I could test it with if you want to send it to me?

Failing that if you're close enough you could pop in and try it.

what you might want to do, and I speak from personal experience with these, is check your PCMCIA port for bent pins. The SquirrelSCSI was notorious for bending and breaking pins in the port. I mangled two PCMCIA ports before I gave up and threw it away.

No bent or broken pins. I also use a Linksys ethernet card so I know the PCMCIA port is working
