exec.library problem with VisualPrefs

Whenever I try to modify some settings like window look in visualprefs I receive this recoverable alert in an infinite loop:

O1OOOOOF Type: Recoverable
Subsystem: exec.library
General: General fault
Specified: Memory header not located
ShowGuru: AN_BadFreeAddr. Der Funktion FreeMem() wurde
eine falsche Adresse übergeben. Dadurch wurde
ein falscher Adreßbereich dem Betriebssystem
als leer übergeben.
LastGURU: Memory header not located, usually an invalid
address passed to FreeMem ()

my exec.library is version 40.10

I can modify some options in VisualPrefs with no problems but I cannot select xen style for window arrow buttons as an example. Is there a way to fix this?

Visualprefs is tremendously bugged. I can't even set it up in my setup

Having square buttons on windows was all I had in mind and that's working fine, but I'm still bitching for more

I don't think it is a problem with exec.library - mine is v40.10 too. I used to use VP, but don't now. I like the mix of old-style Amiga buttons and nice Birdie patterns in 16bit.

Do you have the 1:1 Aspect Ratio option set in IControl? This causes problems with VisualPrefs. If so, deselect it, save IControl prefs and reboot.

If this is not the case, I'm stumped. That's all I can think of!

This is not the case, I don't use Icontrol at all but my system was extremely buggy with 3.1, now with 3.9, I'm having minor problems that I can ignore.
