Amiga Explorer

Hi all,
Thanks for letting me join, and Sorry of this is an ancient question but I am now out of my tree here (also aware this is not strctly amiga forever) ! I was given an Amiga 600 a couple of weeks ago and wanted to interface to my PC via AE. However, it always fails "Reading from COM port" on the RX RAM:Setup.rexx (about 1/2 way through.

My Specs are:
PC - Win 11, USB to Serial (prolific), Null Mode, adapter, DS9 to DS25 adapter
Amiga - Grey WB, all serial settings set appropriately

Notes
- I know the cable setup is good as I have tested the pins with a multimeter and they all check out
- I have used SerialPortMonitor and can send and receive text to and from the Amiga using this so I know comms is ok
- Having looked at RAM:, I know that Setup.rexx is being created
- When I run Type Ser: to RAM:Setup.rexx it sits and does not return to the prompt - is this normal?
- The RX RAM:Setup.rexx command then progresses to about 1/2 way, Setup2 then appears on the RAM disk but it always comes up with error reading com.
- I always in my log end up with:

SERIAL READ ERROR: 4 bytes expected (code 0, timeout 5000)
Handshake failed.
Write Packet 109
< [12 bytes]
< 00 6D 00 00 00 00 00 01 F8 44 C2 DA
< [0 bytes]
SERIAL READ ERROR: 4 bytes expected (code 0, timeout 5625)
< [4 bytes]
< 00 00 00 01
< [0 bytes]
SERIAL READ ERROR: 4 bytes expected (code 0, timeout 5000)

Given I know I can communicate between the two, I suspect it is something to do with the data transmission back from the Amiga to the PC? Does anyone have any ideas, I am totally out of them!!!!

thanks
Magnus

Do all these adapters have the RTS and CTS lines connected?

It's a bit like gambling to try a serial transfer without hardware handshaking.

Did you look into it? Is it readable? No corrupted text? Not cut off in the middle? There are many blank lines at the end IIRC. They just filled it up with newline characters to a full 4096 byte boundary.

It waits for something to arrive on the serial port. So if you are not sending something, yes it's normal. And even while it receives data, it won't print anything because the output goes to Ram:Setup.rexx. It will return to the prompt when the transfer is finished.

You should not do this while you run Setup.rexx at the same time.

Do only what the PC side tells you when it tells you to do it.

Try the setup for WB 1.x instead. I had more success with it.

If you can transfer files to the Amiga by another way, just bring the AExplorer and AExplorer.info files to the Amiga that way.

Once you can run AExplorer, transmissions usually work better because it does error handling and correction.

Thanks for the reply! As the inital Setup does not return to the prompt it is in use eternally, so what I sis was redirect to S: for one to create a copy. The final line in the Setup.rexx is:

ADDRESS COMMAND `Run >NIL:` binfname

and then like I say it doesnt go back to prompt. All the units seem to have RTS and CTS working. I used that on the serial monitor program as well.

cheers

Hi,

Did you set the BAUD rate on the Amiga side?

There are a few other tests you could try - please see:

Thanks folks, I have managed to get it working! I followed this page: http://www.boomerangsworld.de/cms/vc..._transfer.html and this one http://www.stoeggl.com/amiga/adfsend...methods.html#C to get a received.rexx file, sent that via SerialPortMonitor and from there was able to download AExplorer and AExplorer.info to the amiga! all running! havent tried sending or receiving yet, but can see the filesystem at least

It took me ages to get it running on my 1200, and I finally got it so I could write floppies on my 1200 from the pc.
Good to know win 11 still works with it, I’ve not used anything higher than 10.
It makes writing install disks from the os kits much simpler.
