Winuae extreme cpu load
The good news:
I was finally able to finish Agony after a decade on my notebook P4 2Ghz Mobility radeon WinXP pro. However this game still goes to a CPU load of 120% sometimes. On my Desktop AMD XP2200+ Geforce4TI WinXP pro the game sometimes even goes to 220% cpu load! This is when winuae is the only application running and if I check the load when not running winuae it gives a 4% cpu load ( taskmanager). I'm pretty sure it's the config but I can't figure out just what it is. I know in some other threads it's been suggested this can be because of some spyware or something but I don't think that's the case here. I don't know, I figure even with all whistles and bells activate my XP2200 should be able to hold it below 100% Am I missing here something? One last strange thing is that when I run in workbench mode (A1200 Config )with my old Amiga harddisk copied to hardfiles and Picasso96 installed everything runs smooth! Here are some parts of theA500 config I'm using which might give an indication of what's wrong. gfx_width=800 gfx_height=600 gfx_width_windowed=800 gfx_height_windowed=600 gfx_width_fullscreen=800 gfx_height_fullscreen=600 gfx_correct_aspect=false gfx_fullscreen_amiga=false gfx_fullscreen_picasso=false gfx_center_horizontal=none gfx_center_vertical=none gfx_colour_mode=8bit immediate_blits=false fast_copper=false chipset=ecs_agnus collision_level=playfields sound_output=exact sound_bits=16 sound_channels=mono sound_max_buff=16384 sound_frequency=44100 sound_interpol=none sound_adjust=0 sound_filter=off sound_volume=0 nr_floppies=2 floppy_speed=100 floppy_volume=33 win32.cpu_idle=0 chipset=ecs_agnus collision_level=playfields fastmem_size=2 a3000mem_size=0 z3mem_size=0 bogomem_size=0 gfxcard_size=0 chipmem_size=4 cpu_speed=real cpu_type=68000 cpu_compatible=true cpu_cycle_exact=true blitter_cycle_exact=true Hope you guys can help because I hate to wait for that 12Ghz AMD128 to run my old games |

Probably some power-saving feature is confusing WinUAE's timing. Could you attach your winuaebootlog.txt?
Using -nordtsc or -forcerdtsc command line parameter may help. |

turning off cycle exact would be a good idea as it's not needed for Agony (adf or ipf)

Sorry for the late reply, I was in the countryside for the weekend.
@Toni: I attached the winuaebootlog.txt as requested, hope this tells you a bit more. Last edited by Rotr; 03 September 2004 at 20:05. |

It looks like I tested with an old version of winuae, I just tested it with 0.9.91 but it had exactly the same result ( updated the winuaebootlog.txt ), I also tested the -nordtsc or -forcerdtsc command line parameters but no real difference in performance.
@Belgarath, turning cycle exact would probably make things a little better but my point is that I read some of you guys are having no problem with the emulator on a 800Mhz machine so I guess I should be able to run it with cycle exact turned on on a XP2200 machine ( I know this is not real 2,2Ghz but it should act like a P IV 2,2 right? ). |

It all depends on the game, some games will work fine on a 800mhz whereas others won't, and it's not always the ones you think either, i've got a p4 1.3ghz and i can run banshee an aga game with no problems, whereas a simple looking game like head over heels will slow down like crazy and send the cpu usage through the roof. cycle exact can also be a real killer so really don't use it unless the game needs it and by need i mean to work, slight graphics issues are nothing if it means the game will run at fullspeed

Is there some kind of benchmark test available that could be used to test the chipset emulation? Would be nice to know what your system can handle and what not.
