I think I might ask the author about the video format so I can finish my own, written from scratch, video converter, which is mostly done. Has better quality HAM/HAM8 rendering (based on meynaf's HAM rendering), has two properly working dithers: Error diffusion and ordered (and of course no dithering), handles both video and audio in uncompressed AVI files, and allows 8 bit and 14 bit audio output.

The only problem is deciphering the video file format, otherwise it would've been finished. Or someone would have to write a new player (I don't have the time right now).

Amiten: no problem, just sharing the good news

Thorham: sources are included. i think the whole magic is in *.BAS and *.ASM.
if you get in contact with damageX, submit a big thanks for his work!

The only difference I can see from my tower and desktop set-ups is: different memory configuration and using a multi-scan monitor. I suspect it's a memory issue on the 1200.
I have Dell LCD monitor capable of 15KHz display, as far as memory, I got 64MB.
I do want to point out that the videos run choppy from a HD with FFS. All videos I tried and work very well are from CF card with FAT95.
Maybe that's the problem?

Yeah, I know. I actually didn't use any of the original authors work. The code is open source, so I can post it if anyone's interested (or wants proof ).

I just wish I either had the time to write my own player, or that someone else would write one. It really sucks having a converter that's almost done, only to find out that it's likely I'm not going to have time to do a player. Sigh... Perhaps I can get out from underneath some of the bull crap I have to handle, on the other hand, a converter is only half the job done, and I have a problem with finishing things (the converter really is almost done, though)...

I had a bit of luck last night using VirtualDub to create an AVI (320x240) with the CinePack codec. I'll have another play with the VirtualDub settings and see if I can improve it.

You can try this filter http://whitewing.co.uk/vdub_errdiff.html
It makes conversion from 24bit to 16bit look much better.

perhaps for movies but if you want to convert an intro of a cd-rom game, the result is 1 time good 1 time ugly because the colours can be slobbery.
it should have a version who could make 256 colours and ham and the other problem is the player, you can't quit it.
My goal was to take intro games from others game machines and add these intros to the cd32 version.
one i did and use is flink with the intro of the segacd version... the only problem is that you have to look all the intro, i found no way to quit the intro before the end... And with flink the colours are no too much slobbery.

Avisynth http://avisynth.nl/index.php/Main_Page script can help with color reduction. It require http://ldesoras.free.fr/prod.html#src_ditheravsi package and related, yadif http://avisynth.org.ru/yadif/yadif.html plugin is required if antialiasing is activated, script have some limited "flexibility" (hires and interlace "support"), it can be extended by adding framerate conversion http://avisynth.org.ru/mvtools/mvtools2.html to reduce fps in smarter way due Amiga limitations.

This is relatively slow script and have own limitations (rounding errors?), perhaps due ditheravsi and it require tweak for different color depth - it is best to use some grayscale picture pattern - for example Click image for larger version

for fixed pallete animation ImageMagick http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php batch can be helpful.

Code:
convert -quiet source.avi -ordered-dither o2x2,12 -delay 1x10 -dither Riemersma -colors 256 +map -type optimize source_od2.gif
convert source_od2.gif -delay 1x10 -layers OptimizeTransparency +map source.gif
Later conversion from gif to anim should be easy... for this script uncompressed (raw) RGB avi file is required

feel free to modify and improve - reading documentation for plugins or imagemagick can be helpful as there is many options to change
