Recommend Mouse adaptor?
Hi all,
I've been using a Cocolino mouse adaptor with Freewheel and an optical mouse. Although it works fine within Workbench I noticed that in a WHDLoad game eg Sreel Empire/Cyber Empires it does not recognise a sustained press of the button (required to move the map window around). I don't know if it ever did or if this is something that has broken at some point. Anyway, I wondered if anybody had recommendations for a replacement - or indeed if anybody else has encountered similar problems. Cheers. |

Thanks for that, a worthwhile read, although it doesn't deal with the problem I am having.

the tikus is the best by far
also being very small It does not hinder the connection if you have a joystick connected or another joystick adapter you can get it here https://amigastore.eu/950-tikus-usb-...d-adapter.html |

Tikus is so small it almost makes me forgive the A600 design where the cord sticks out right into the path of the mouse!

Does tikus support changing mouse sensitivity?
And scroll wheel? Might pick one up. |

HID2AMI and MouSTer adapters both support the scroll wheel.

I just confirmed my WHDLoad issue with my Cocolino adapter. With Steel Empire at least it basically puts the left mouse button on autofire, so any click and hold operation becomes impossible. Works fine dragging things around on Workbench, and there isn't an issue using a standard Amiga mouse.
Could it be an issue with mouse (PS2 optical wired) or is the adaptor more likely the cause? It might actually be more common than you'd think, it's not that for a game to require you to click and hold..... Last edited by Angus; 17 July 2024 at 19:58. |

I bought a Tikus and it works well, highly recommended. But damn, if I had seen this video before the order I would not have bought it from Lotharek!

That's unfortunate, I've bought a couple of items from Lotharek (both Amiga and Atari 8-bit items) that have been great, but have also heard of issues cropping up that have needed firmware updates. Retrocomputers are a minefield when it comes to pushing them beyond their original spec, and issues like this are bound to crop up. Also, while the guy making the video is indeed a very knowledgeable and helpful guy, he also has strange attitudes and less than savoury opinions at times, so I would suggest a pinch of salt to go with his rants.

I do not know him personally but I think this particular point is proven at length in the video (certainly one of his faults it is that the videos are very long). He's an excellent technician and software engineer and the designer of the hardware certainly trusts him. |

Update;
I now have the Tikus mouse adaptor and a USB mouse. Yay! I'm having some difficulty setting it up though. Initially it worked except if I opened a program on another screen, every time I clicked the left button it would change screen. I have sorted that out by setting Freewheel to ignore the middle button, and the mouse now works like an original 2 button Amiga mouse. The thing is, I would like to be able to use the scroll wheel, and the middle mouse button to change screen, as ut did with my Cocolino adaptor. My system currently has Freewheel in the WB startup and Cocolino.driver calledfrom the user-startup - which apparently are needed for the middle button/wheel. Any help appreciated, I'm confused. :-/ |

My understanding is the Tikus uses the TankMouse driver, not the Cocolino driver.

I've had great luck on the A1200 with AmigaKit's adapter and no driver required.
https://www.amigakit.com/amiga-mouse...r-p-12699.html No luck getting it to work on Vampire V4 though. Logi wireless mice seem to work fine on V4 anyway after lots of different mouse tests. I've got a ton of mice, luckily. |

You only need a driver for the mousewheel - it should otherwise work as a 2-button mouse when no driver's involved. Having a driver installed for the wrong (or no) wheelmouse / adaptor though will give all sorts of weird behaviour due to incorrectly interpreting the signals on the port.

Convert a mouse that have built-in chip that supports quadrature - then simply wire up for Amiga.

On the AMIGAstore website Tikus page it says: Amiga with scroll (Coccolino driver and freewheel app) which I had installed and working already with my Cocolino PS2 adaptor. Maybe the unit is defective - or more likely I'm missing something obvious. |

-- It uses Cocolino and Freewheel software, which are for WB 3.1 and below (AFAIK). Possibly if you have another with built in support for the same it could change how it reads the mouse, this is very central to AmigaOS. If you are on 3.1, you can always temporarily remove the Cocolino and Freewheel software and see if it behaves normally on left-click. Did it solve your original problem in the game (and is it run from WB or not)? If the game isn't run under WB, and it didn't solve the left-click problem in the game, then you've swapped mouse and still have the same problem. There might be something wrong with your mouse port or the HW reading it. |
