Blitz Basic 1 & 2

Could someone please tell me the main differences between Blitz Basic 1 and 2? Ive looking into learning Blitz Basic and ive got a manual for Blitz 1 but it seems that Blitz Basic 2 is far more popular, any reason why? Also, any help on where to get tutorials or whatever would be helpful. Thanks.

Blitz Basic 2.1 (plus the Blitz Support Suite) is the one you should go for, it's far more stable and supports AGA and has more commands too.

Also it is still being developed and it's called AmiBlitz these days, so you may wish to go for that too, should be on Aminet I would have thought.

Thank you, ive already dabbled a tiny bit with both of them. I'm not too concerned about the AGA support as I plan to make stuff for the A500 & A600. But as it has more commands and an active development, seems like a wise choice.

Still haven't noticed many major differences between the two though, just that Blitz 1 (so far) has been able to get fullscreen graphics easier. Any links or books with guides/tutorials etc for a starting point would be helpful, thanks.

If you're only going to do OCS/ECS stuff then to be honest there probably isn't a great deal of difference. But in your case I wouldn't really bother too much with the latest AmiBlitz versions; 2.1 will certainly do more than enough for you.

There are some tutorials for Blitz on the Amiga Magazine Rack which may interest you; try Amiga Format issues 52 and 60-66 for quite a lot of stuff. Also Aminet has loads of source code for various different programs; I also have quite a lot of examples etc myself on my Amiga at home if you would like me to upload them for you at some point.

There are probably plenty of sites with Blitz-related things on them I'd imagine but none spring to mind right this minute

Thanks for the quick response and helpful info, I downloaded the .adf of Blitz 2.1 a while ago and I got Blitz 1 disks with the manual.

I'll give Blitz 2 a proper go again asap with the guides and sources from aminet, try and get some basic graphical stuffs going. Thanks again

Oh, and if you have a look in the Zone there are actually currently some Blitz-related tutorials there too, so you may want to grab them while you can, they may be of interest.

Well, I plan to make a top down gun 'n run with a bit of an rpg twist if possible, similar to Chaos Engine in some ways I suppose.

Generally I would like to learn a language a bit further than usual, I have basic knowledge of PASCAL, qBASIC, AmigaBASIC, C, C++, x86 assembly and a few others, but I never really did much with them.

But yeah, i'll see what I can find there, thanks. What stuff have you made in Blitz?

Sounds interesting, hope you'll succeed.

Never really done anything special in Blitz, a couple of games - one called Blobz (no relation to an old commercial game) which was bascially just a simple overhead-viewed game where you just had to collect diamonds (and it isn't very good in all honesty) and a five-player game called Tank Wars. I've got two or three unfinished games too, one is an AGA shoot-em-up called Annihilation which I worked on for a long time but eventually it proved a bit beyond me to do what I wanted to do and so I gave the code away to a couple of other guys.

I had been working on an update to Tank Wars until a few months ago and I would like to do some coding again but finding the time and inspiration is proving difficult at the minute.

If you could upload any stuff you'd think would be helpful that'd be great. Thank you, both of you for your help. Ive been trying out some Blitz2 stuff, I found a Blitz guide and a manual with some examples, I think they were from Blitz2000 and aminet.

I got the Ultimate Blitz Basic 2.1 ISO image from another site (better not mention it here!) which has since closed down. I didn't think it was available anywhere else, which is why I offered to upload it.

It's the same ISO image, but RAR compression has made my file smaller than the ZIP file on BTTR by some 3MB!

zip is rubbish at compressing files, order of my perferd compressors is

7z , Rar then Zip
