Stupid noob TOSEC questions

I think the more I read, the more I keep getting myself confused about TOSEC, so I want to clarify the most basic things.

I have an out-of-date TOSEC set sitting on my hard drive from 2006. If I download the relevant DATs and an appropriate program will it rename the files in my collection automatically? Is this by looking at the CRC32 code on the floppy disk and comparing the associated name in the database? What is this CRC32, how is it generated and how does an ordinary Joe like me find out the CRC of an ADF? Which scan & rename utility is best? Does the TOSEC website always have the most up-to-date DATs? Am I annoying you with all my questions yet? ;-)

CRC32:

This wiki page should give you a good idea how the tosec chaps use.

One of its uses is for checking if the file you have is exactly the same as the one someone else has. This is done by generating a unique(?) number(or something) from the original file using an algorithim. You can then run the same algorithim on your file and if it outputs the same number that the other person generated, then you know you have the exact same file with no errors or 'distortions'.

There are plenty of CRC32 generators and checkers out there, just google it and pick one that looks good.

Well I did a mass rename of my game ADFs as per the instructions (using newest TOSEC DATs) and I got 79 left over, mainly pretty obscure stuff. is anyone still interested in all that?
