Epyx's Summer Games (my retrospective)

Hi, guys. I thought you'd like to know that I just posted my new episode of "Matt Chat." This time it's on Epyx's Summer Games, one of my favorite sports games. I guess this would be considered "casual" gaming today, and I've even heard of a version out for the iPhone.

Anyway, I hope you like it! It's an oldie but a goodie.

And yes, I know there are lots of different versions. I wish I had time to show them all! I'm sure that other versions had better graphics than the poor ol' Commodore 64 (and some had worse, no doubt!).

Nice review Matt. Good choice with the C64 version, this is a real classic. Have you noticed that the Amiga version lacks the World Records standings? Makes this port pretty redundent.

Ah, Summer Games aka Joystick Breaker

Played that a lot with friends on the C64 and think Epyx owes me ten joysticks or so

Well, the first CP sticks (and later some cheap budget versions) had "metal-tongues" instead of micro-switches.

Yes, I was very tempted to whip out the X-Arcade and see how it would fare, but the threat of joystick breakage dissuaded me.

However, it's hard as steel trying to play these with a keyboard!!! Definitely not recommended.

I thought the review was very professional looking (liked the transitions and zooms). The background of game boxes adds to the touch as well. I remember playing this game vividly as well.

I dont like Epyx games, in my opinion they suck

Yes, and played great sportgames like Hypersports, Day 1 and 2 (Daley Thompons Decathlon), Daley Thompsons Super Test

I am spoiled by Hypersports and Track and Field (MAME), Summer/Winter Challenge (PC), now by Athlete Kings on Saturn, Epyx games are boring for my taste. No wiggling, no fun !

I used to love this style of game. There was one I played on the CPC464 that had an event where you had to dive off a cliff, but had to time it right and jump so you hit the water as the sea swelled, otherwise you hit the rocks. Any idea what game that was?

Thanks. That does look like the one. I used to love the weight lifting section. Did that one also have the sumo wrestling? As I remember that being fun too.

ahh so they were a precursor of the Wii!

Missus bought one on Saturday, by Saturday night I was bored of all the wiggle the controller mini games on the sodding thing.

The only games I'm interested in checking out are Endless Ocean (I like the sound of under water exploration) and House of the Dead and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.

There was a technique on the Spectrum where you placed a marble between the two keys for such games, and it did work well. Knackered the rubber keys though.
