Starting to lose my mind on Hardfiles and OS4.1

hi,

I think I am loosing my mind on this damm thing!

I did a fresh OD 4.1FE classic install incl. all updates.
Now, I just want to add another bloddy disk to my emulated system.

I managed to add a dynamic harddisk that after some try and error finally showed up on Workbench, so I could format it - wow!

After formatting worked in 2nd try (1st try hang up on "initializing disk" like forever), I tried to copy a few files, unpack stuff and finally install something to the new drive.

Awesome!

Now things are start to hang again, no way to finish an install. Sometimes it reaches like 17%, sometimes 6% and boom - bye bye...

What is this S#!t with hardfiles/VHD´s ???
Kind of Windows protection?
Rights management?
Bug in Os 4.1FE?
Bug in WinUAE?
Bug in Qemu plugin?
Faulty ROM file?`
The hell?

Please for god´s sake, tell me???

I am trying for hours to get another working disk besides my system disk - but man, I start to

Can someone PLEASE clarify:

1. How many HDDs can Os 4.1FE classic Upd.2 in emulated environment take? Just one?`

2. How should I add another HDD to this system?
Using "Accelerator" or "UAE device"? What settings are viable here?

3. Do the new disk need to be bootable as well? why?

4. What kind of filesystem is allowed for a disk, if it´s not system disk?

5. Why the heck do most file-stuff (copy/install) cause the emulated OS to freeze on this task?

cheers!

The CSPPC can take up to 15 SCSI devices. If you remove the CD drive you can have 15 harddrives.

I don't know the limit of the UAE controler but I would guess it can take 30 or more drives.

And no, there is nothing wrong with WinUAE or any of its components.

You should really click that RDB mode button. Non-RDB mode HDFs are not really harddrives, more like big floppy disks. They are predestined to cause trouble with OS4.

Ok - so the limit of disks is pretty high, then

In the meantime I added a "directory" as harddrive - this works so far.
But from experience I don´t think it will stay this way.
In the past, these "folder-disks" were predestined to erorr and failure after a while.

Now - I will give it a final try and see if i can add another disk to my system.

thank you Thomas

So I created a new disk (non-bootable, 2GB size, dynamic image, RDB mode on, controlled by the accelerator (cybppc.device)

When I open Media-Tool, select cybppc.device I get the message, that my setup has changed (right, I added a new disk).

The disk is there and I add a partition and a filesystem. Basically the same stuff as for the system-disk, but I set the new disk not to be bootable.

Then I save all changes to that new disk and close Media-Tool.
Now I get a warning, that all changes will be lost. (I think this is refering just to un-saved ones?!)

Anyways, after this there is no new disk mounting on my desk.
The Media-Toolbox throws a Guru....

After re-booting I checked with Media-Tool again, the partition and filesystem are there.
When I try to exit Media-Tool, I can not close then "Select Device to use" Window anymore and it becomes unresponsive...

Still no additional Disk on my WB...

Why?

You should stop creating new threads for each failing step you do and rather read the replies you get.

Always, always use RDB mode for OS 4.1. Which also makes it more manageable if you don't update the SYS: drive when adding a (temp) new HDF.

"Non-RDB mode HDFs are not really harddrives, more like big floppy disks." - Yeeeaaaaahhh true, haha. Even with OS 3.1 to 3.2.1. RDB mode is the best.

Hmm...I've not noticed any Guru's from all the Hard Drive stuff I've done with OS 4.x. Hmm..is your SYS: also VHD?

I'm not sure which God you're invoking from your first post here, but for Your Sake, don't use VHD. ;-) No, no..no... Ha.
