A cruncher is a packer like WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip. It's called cruncher because it 'crunches' data to a smaller size

All data like a normal packer would do it. It uses an algorithm to compress the data, so it can be used on any data (executables, gfx, sfx and music). Many crackers used them to free some space on a disk for cracktros and the like.

Actually, programs such as WinZip are archivers, which compress multiple files into one file. A cruncher only works on a single file

there are also packers like Powerpacker or imploder that crunch executables files leaving them still executables. which is, in a way, boring.

Without such "boring" feature a lot of 4k/64k intros would not have been possible.

Further more, Power Packer can also crunch libraries (loadseg option), and have them automatically decrunched with powerpacker patch. Used to be great back when I had an Amiga 500 with only a diskdrive, and also for my A1200s first harddisk, which was only 63mb!

this is something else the pc lack`s a decent real time compressor, sure you can compress a drive but not all compressors are good for all data

Hehe, I used to hate that 'feature' so much that I hacked it out of the program

later the xpk libraries offer the same feature with better compressed ratio and specific libs for specific type of data.
