Problems reading Jaz disk
Hi:
i have an external scsi jaz 1gb unit connected to an a3000. The unit was running properly as i was using a 1gb disk as backup. Then i changed the old internal HD to a new more bigger HD and now i cannot read the jaz disk. I really don't know what to do. Any ideas? Best regards Rod p.d. Anyone selling a Picasso or Cyb64 (or similar?). |

Does your new drives SCSI ID clash with the Jaz? That'd be the first thing to check...

So just to confirm, each unit in your SCSI chain has a unique SCSI ID?

Jope:
with Scout i got the following mounted devs with the matching SCSI Id. the units of the scsi chain are: unit 0 HD scsi.device unit 1 CD (L:CacheCDFS) unit 4 JAZ (L:FastFileSystem) A double click on the JAz unit show that is unit 4 on the scsi.device with a 95.8 M Size, but no icon is displayed on the screen. Any ideas? Rod |

Just a guess, but it could be a termination problem. Perhaps the HD you pulled out was terminated and the new one is not, or vice-versa. Some HD's have termination resistor packs in sockets next to the 50-pin connector, others have a jumper to turn termination on/off. That would be the next thing to check if there are no ID conflicts.
BTW, isn't the JAZ a 1 GB drive? (95.8MB seems more like a zip drive) |

Hi:
i just made a detailed research on my scsi chain with the following results: 1.) Id 0: HD (i have to check for termination, any ideas?). 2.) Id 1: Toshiba TXM4101L1 (very old), external CD-Rom, Shared terminator power enabled (that is the option used). 3.) Id 4: Iomega Jaz Drive. With termination off. The chain is cabled like this A3000(with HD) --> Jaz drive --> CD-Rom, there fore units 0 and 1 should be terminated and not unit 4? Is this correct? I will look for the termination on the A3000 Hd but i don't really know how to look. Any ideas? Update: i disconnected the cdrom, changed termination to on status on the jaz drive and the system boots. I can see the jaz drive. The system is a bit unstable but works. I backed up 50 mb of files very fast without problems. I required a second boot to able to do it, on the first attempt the system hang after 1 minute. This seems to indicate a termination problem with the cd-rom? New Update: I tried to remake the system crash that i first had and the problem seems to be while opening the "jaz windows" (double click on the icon). The problems is that is not every time i open the drive, but more randomly. Any ideas with this? New Update: I still don't know why i see a 100 mb partition. If i used Hdtoolbox i can see only one 1gb partition. The mounter Utils sees a 1 gb partition called A4000jaz (Filesystem DOS\1) but if i push the mount button, nothing happens. I checked aftwards with the mounted devs option from Scout and the A4000jaz unit is mounted, but on state it says "No Disk!!!". Strange. Sorry for not reponding sooner Rod.
It does sound like a termination issue to me, because when you changed the termination on the Jaz drive, it worked (somewhat). What is the brand and model of the HD? A google search might tell you how to set the termination. Older drives used resistor packs (long black things, usually three of them) on the bottom of the drive, plugged in along side the 50-pin scsi connector. Most newer drives (> 1 GB) have a single jumper, possibly labeled TERM. The jumper should be near the jumpers that set the drive id #. I found some documentation for a Quantum Fireball drive, perhaps it is similar to your drive. If you can post a picture that would be helpful (old and/or new drive circuit board). |

another thing to check is the revision of the scsi controller, if you see proto or 00-04 in the part number you'll need to replace with a upgraded part
